DMP Productions
For years, you may have sung the timeless hymn “It Is Well with My Soul,” its melody a familiar comfort in churches and homes alike. But have you ever delved into the astonishing true story behind it?
The hymn was penned by Horatio Spafford, a prosperous Chicago businessman in the mid-nineteenth century, with music crafted by Philip Bliss, composer of “Hallelujah, What a Saviour!” Together, they created a work that has become a beacon of hope amid life’s fiercest storms. Spafford’s life, however, was far from serene.
In 1871, the Great Chicago Fire roared through the city, reducing his thriving real estate empire to smoldering ruins. Undeterred, he leaned on his deep faith to rebuild. But in 1873, a far crueler blow fell: his four daughters—Annie, Maggie, Bessie, and Tanetta—drowned in a tragic shipwreck while sailing to Europe with their mother.
Devastated yet resolute, Spafford set out to join his grieving wife. As his ship crossed the Atlantic, passing near the waters that claimed his children, an inexplicable peace washed over him. In that sacred moment, he wrote the words to “It Is Well with My Soul.” Its opening lines—“When peace like a river, attendeth my way, / When sorrows like sea billows roll”—echo the clash of his anguish and the solace of God’s grace.
Today, Spafford’s story lives on in a book, a musical, and an upcoming film. Visit Itiswellwithmysoul.com to explore this tale of courage and buy the book and musical songbook. Let it bless you.
