BIPOC Mental Health Month 2020 Toolkit
July is Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) Mental Health Month, a time to shed light on the mental health needs of these traditionally underserved and underrepresented individuals. Mental Health America has developed a toolkit for those who want to raise awareness of the mental health experiences of BIPOC. The toolkit includes social media materials as well as resources specifically for BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities, handouts on racism and mental health and racial trauma, infographics, and a call to action to share how discrimination and/or racism have affected individuals’ mental health. You can get details and download the toolkit at this link .
Remembering Kaylin Jones
We regret to share with our partners and community members the recent passing of Kaylin Jones, the Chair of the Milwaukee County Substance Abuse Prevention coalition in 2017 and 2018. Kaylin was a passionate, inspiring, and energetic young leader who had a great impact on the young people in our community, a woman who led by example and was always willing to lend a helping hand. We'll always remember her fantastic enthusiasm for helping young people and individuals impacted by substance abuse, which made even the most difficult tasks enjoyable.

"Kaylin was young but she leaves behind an incredible legacy among our city’s youth," said Kasaundra Brown, MCSAP's Coordinator. "This is a huge loss to the community and the youth that she so tirelessly and selflessly served. Kaylin was a true champion. She will be greatly missed."

Our hearts are with Kaylin’s family, friends, and the youth in her care at this difficult time.

One in Five Milwaukee Retailers Are Selling Tobacco to Youth
2019's Wisconsin Wins checks of retailers found that 1 in 5 local shops are selling cigarettes, cigarillos, and e-cigarettes to minors, even though it’s illegal. That's a slight decrease from 2018's numbers, but also up from 11% in 2009, indicating a worrying 10-year trend. The Wins checks, conducted by FACT youth members paired with Milwaukee Police officers, also found that rates were highest in Aldermanic Districts 1, 9, and 4. The checks were conducted before Tobacco 21 went into effect in December 2019, which raised the legal minimum age for tobacco sales to 21 across the country. You can read more about it in the Milwaukee Community Journal.
Wisconsin’s Clean Indoor Air Law Turns 10
On July 5, 2010, Wisconsin’s Clean Indoor Air Law went into effect, which prohibits smoking in indoor spaces, such as bars, restaurants, and other workplaces statewide. Now, ten years later, tobacco-free advocates are calling for the law to be updated to include a ban on vaping as well, noting that the chemicals typically expelled by vapes—including nicotine, carcinogens, heavy metals, and volatile organic compounds—are harmful. About one-third of Wisconsin residents—including those who live in Milwaukee—are protected by local ordinances banning vaping in public.

Bills with bipartisan support were introduced in both houses of the Legislature last session, but neither received a hearing in committee. “We encourage lawmakers to support this legislation, which is a simple update that keeps up with the quickly changing tobacco industry that is working to addict a new generation of lifelong tobacco users,” said Sara Sahli, Government Relations Director with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network in a press release.

Milwaukee Fire Department Assistant Chief Aaron Lipski wrote a letter to the Cap Times celebrating the 10-year anniversary, noting that smoking rates among adults and high school youth have dropped in the past decade. He also called on the Legislature to add vaping to the smoke-free indoor air law.
