New National Data on

Drug Use and Health

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), has recently released the results of the 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH)


Key findings include:


  • Among people aged 12 or older in 2022, 59.8% (or 168.7 million people) used tobacco products, vaped nicotine, used alcohol, or used an illicit drug in the past month.
  • 70.3 million people aged 12 or older (or 24.9%) used illicit drugs in the past year. Marijuana was the most used illicit drug.
  • 48.7 million people aged 12 or older (or 17.3%) had a substance use disorder (SUD) in the past year.
  • Almost 1 in 4 adults aged 18 or older had any mental illness (AMI) in the past year (59.3 million or 23.1%).

Survey Reveals Disturbing Trends in

Underage Vape and Tobacco Use in Wisconsin

After a startling report by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services found that underage vape and tobacco sales increased by 14.2% from 2022 to 2023, the state of Wisconsin is taking action to prevent the growing trend of sales of vape and tobacco products to minors. These insights come from the Synar Survey and the information from this survey is being used for the Tobacco 21 Campaign, which aims to educate about the laws surrounding vaping and tobacco use in Wisconsin.

The Translational Design workshop is a six-week training course led by the Institute for Child and Family Well-Being that is structured to meet the needs of busy schedules. At your own pace, you will complete weekly online activities and exercises that are focused on creating tangible opportunities for knowledge application.

Bridging the Generational Divide

with Rosalind Wiseman

The world is changing at a rapid pace and many young adults are struggling to adapt while those who care about them struggle to understand what to do to help. This event provides answers based on more than 25 years of research and bridges the communication gap between young adults and older adults. This session will be held on Tuesday, November 28, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the University School of Milwaukee's Mellowes Hall. Tickets are free and can be obtained by visiting the event website.

Supporting Engaged Fatherhood and

Family Well-Being:

The Role of Policy from the Community Level

to the Federal Level

Policy decisions made at the federal, state, and local levels directly affect the well-being of fathers, their children, and families. Policies may support father-child engagement or make it more difficult for fathers to be the parents, partners, and providers they want to be. This webinar will highlight research addressing fathers’ circumstances, the challenges they face, and discuss implications for policymaking across levels of government. Panelists will offer perspectives and share insights from their experiences with the development of public policy to support engaged fatherhood and help families thrive. This webinar from the Institute for Research on Poverty will be held from 12 noon to 1 p.m. on November 29. Registration is required.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Training with Consultation Calls

Applications Due December 4

The Great Lakes Mental Health Technology Transfer Center will host a virtual Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) training and 12 consultation calls (dates to be determined) for 24 behavioral health professionals and school mental health counselors in HHS Region 5 (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin).

 

TF-CBT is an evidence-based treatment for children and adolescents from 3 to 18 years old. TF-CBT aims to help children, adolescents, and their caregivers overcome adverse events such as sexual abuse, domestic violence, child maltreatment, discrimination, and other types of traumatic experiences. It is a components-based treatment model that incorporates trauma-sensitive interventions with cognitive behavioral, family, and humanistic principles and techniques. The presenter will provide strategies and adaptations that are culturally responsive for diverse communities.


Applications must be submitted by December 4, 2023. Approved applicants will be notified by December 11, 2023.
