Velkommen til Norge (welcome to Norway)! Historic Hotels Worldwide has rounded up some of the many Norwegian hotels that are available to visit. Norway is a terrific place to go for a truly memorable vacation. Nordic history is overflowing throughout the country and is present in its many historical landmarks which include the Urnes Stave Church, the Bryggen, and the Akershus Fortress. Some of its national treasures have even inspired pop culture hits such as Thor and Frozen, like St. Olaf’s Church in the village of Balestrand, which inspired both the chapel in the first Frozen film’s coronation scene and the name of the series’ lovable snowman. Flights from the United States are affordable and typically non- or one-stop from major US cities. No matter if its the city or the fjords are calling, Norway has something to offer every cultural traveler!

In the heart of Bergen, Opus XVI is perfectly positioned for both urban and outdoor adventures. This historic, family-run hotel boasts 65 guestrooms, including five suites. Once the city’s largest bank, it has since been reincarnated as a historic, family-run hotel inspired by famed Romantic-era Norwegian composer and pianist Edvard Grieg, who is both a relative of one of the hotel’s current owners and a former Bergen resident. It is this virtuosic predecessor that gives Opus XVI its musical name, taking the title from one of Grieg’s most masterful works, Piano Concerto in A Minor, Op. 16.
Inside the ring of the Artic Circle sits Helgeland, a UNESCO World Heritage Site island known for its white sandy beaches, legendary mountains, incredible animal life, midnight sun, northern lights sightings, and finally, its location inside the Arctic circle. Helgeland consists of different island communities, one of which is Støtt, where STØTT Top of Helgeland hotel resides. Operated as a unique trading post in the 19th century, it is now a prime destination for travelers to visit and marvel at the natural beauty within the Arctic circle. Nestled in the heart of the Hardangerfjord, an idyllic region in Western Norway lauded as both the “Queen of the Fjords” and the “Orchard of Norway,” Brakanes Hotel is ideally situated for travelers hoping to explore the abundant natural beauty this area has to offer. In the south of Norway about two and a half hours east of Bergen is the beautiful Bårdshaug Herregård. Former home of architect, entrepreneur, and traveler Christian Thams, Bårdshaug Herregård began as a parsonage converted into a thoughtfully decorated personal residence. Today, the 65 guestrooms at the hotel still reflect the intricate details of Christian Thams' passions and history with its decor and original furnishings. Once a seafront warehouse a third of the way up the Norwegian west coast and built in 1904, Hotel Brosundet is a structural masterpiece in the heart of historic Ålesund. Though it stopped operating during the 1980s, Brosundet still celebrates its maritime past within its premier seafood restaurant, Maki. This magnificent building features distinctive Art Nouveau architecture, as well as a historic lighthouse. Most of the original wood and brick remain, and the decór of the hotel wonderfully captivates the rustic ambiance of the surrounding community. Situated in the heart of the colorful town of Ålesund, Hotel Brosundet is close to many amazing shops, restaurants, and boats. This small Art Nouveau village is paved with countless cobblestones that radiate an alluring rustic charm.
