They Hear You." campaign and looking ahead to SAMHSA’s 20th Prevention Day. Its Prevention Month Toolkit includes social media shareables, resources, and links to technical assistance options.

As we mark our 15th anniversary, we at Community Advocates Public Policy Institute are recommitting to enhancing our community members’ health, mental health, and wellness to by addressing the harms posed by opioids and other drugs to individuals, families, and communities.
To help us understand how various forms of opioids and other deadly substances find their way into our community and what we can do about it, on November 2 we will host a special night with investigative reporter Ben Westhoff, author of Fentanyl, Inc.: How Rogue Chemists Created the Deadliest Wave of the Opioid Epidemic.
The event will be held at the Grace Center in Downtown Milwaukee, and will feature presentations by local leaders, a book signing with Westhoff, appetizers and desserts, nonalcoholic "mocktails" specially developed for our guests, a silent auction, and free Narcan and training.
Our event sponsors, PPI Members, and special guests will be able to meet Westhoff in an intimate gathering before the program begins and may receive a complimentary copy of his book—another reason to consider becoming an individual or organizational member of the PPI Network.

National Hispanic Heritage Month

National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed each year in the U.S. from September 15 to October 15 to celebrate the achievements, histories, traditions, and cultural diversity of Hispanic/Latino Americans.
The HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) is committed to advancing Better Health Through Better Understanding for Hispanic/Latino individuals by providing them with culturally and linguistically competent healthcare services, information, and resources. When patients are provided with culturally and linguistically appropriate information, they are empowered to create healthier outcomes for themselves and their communities. OMH has created a social media toolkit and gathered resources to review and share to deepen your understanding of Hispanic/Latino health issues.

Vel Phillips Forum: What is Happening with DEI in Our Schools?

For students, teachers, families, and folks who care about equity in our community. DEI efforts are under attack in our schools. Long-term systemic racism must be countered by long-term systemic anti-racism that lifts up and collaborates with marginalized people. Societies are stronger, richer and more resilient when they respect, value and learn from diverse cultures, knowledge, experiences, and ideas.
Panelists include Elisabeth Lambert, Wisconsin Education Law & Policy Hub; Diannia Merriett, Parents Advocating for Greendale Equity; Alyson Weiss, Superintendent, Glendale River Hills; Nathan Russell, Founder, Suburbs for Equality. Moderator is Emilio De Torre of Milwaukee Turners. It’s cosponsored by Glendale River Hills School District, Break the Silence in the Burs, Wisconsin Education Law & Policy Hub, Suburbs for Equality, Germantown Community Coalition, Bay Bridge, People Advocating for Greendale Equity (PAGE), UWM Students for a Democratic Society, From the Same Dust: A Baha'i Group, Tosa Together, and the Milwaukee Turners.
This is a hybrid event with in-person and virtual options. It’ll begin at 5 p.m. on October 10.

Native Nations Nursing, Helpers, and Healers Summit

The Native Nations Nursing, Helpers, and Healers Summit focuses on education for the interprofessional team about evidence-based approaches for optimal, culturally congruent health care for Native American people and communities. Summit speakers will highlight best practices for holistic care, interprofessional collaboration, whole-person care, and culturally specific trauma-informed care.
The event includes:
- Information about pathways to healing professions for middle and high school students.
- Career advancement opportunities within nursing.
- Continuing education for RNs, advanced practice nurses, physicians, psychologists, and social workers. Learn more about continuing education credit.
UW-Madison School of Nursing is partnering with Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University and the College of Menominee Nation’s Seven Generations Summit. The Native Nations Nursing, Helpers, and Healers Summit will serve as the pre-convening for the Seven Generations Summit on Wednesday, October 11. There will be additional nursing and health-related sessions during the Seven Generations Summit on October 12 and 13.
Both summits will take place at Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University in Hayward.

Using Cultural Elements and Brief Interventions to Reduce Substance Use with Hispanic and Latinx Communities

Prevention with Latinx communities includes a culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and inclusive framework conducive to screening and early intervention. This session from the Northeast and Caribbean PTTC will inform on how taking a few minutes to conduct a person-centered brief intervention can help motivate reduction of substance use with Hispanic, Latino and Latinx communities. The approach further identifies those with high potential for a substance use disorder and opportunities for accessing culturally relevant resources. It will begin at 9 a.m. on October 13.

Adult Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders. This training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care.
What the Mental Health First Aid Course offers:
- Common signs and symptoms of mental illness
- Common signs and symptoms of substance use
- How to interact with a person in crisis
- How to connect the person with help
- Content on trauma, addiction, and self-care
This session will be held on Zoom from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on October 16.

Utility Services/Energy Assistance

The Empowerment Coalition of Milwaukee (ECOM) is a monthly gathering of social services professionals, advocates, and consumers organized by Community Advocates Public Policy Institute. This month's topic is Utility Services/Energy Assistance and will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at Community Advocates, 728 N. James Lovell St., Milwaukee. Data Day, hosted by Data You Can Use, provides an opportunity for leaders from neighborhoods, nonprofits, universities, the public sector, and beyond to better understand what data are available, the implications of data on community revitalization, and how to increase connections between research and practice. Data Day 2023 will be Milwaukee’s 9th annual Data Day celebration, and the theme this year is "Journey to Justice: Using Data for Systems Change in Milwaukee."

Raising Resilient Kids with Sheri Glucoft Wong

Join REDgen for an evening with Sheri Glucoft Wong to learn about attitudes and approaches that support our children's emotional and social development and encourage their confidence and resilience. This talk is intentionally designed to address children ranging from Preschool-age through High School. There will be a forum for questions after the talk.
In this workshop, you will learn to:
- Support your children's capacity to handle disappointment and other setbacks
- Share messages that promote self-esteem and self-reliance
- Set limits in ways that empower your children and strengthen their confidence
- Encourage attitudes that translate into social and emotional well-being
- Partner with school to support your children in their world outside of home

Project Homeless Connect

Project Homeless Connect, organized by United Way of Greater Milwaukee and Waukesha County, is an annual event that brings resources and services together under one roof to best serve those experiencing homelessness. Over 700 guests and 400 volunteers attend Milwaukee Project Homeless Connect for this one-day event. Milwaukee has hosted this event since 2009, and Waukesha had its first event in 2019. Organizers are looking for donors, sponsors, outreach organizations, and volunteers.

Youth Mental Health First Aid

Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis.
The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations.
This Zoom session will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on October 20.

MHTTC Network's Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Reference Guide
This reference guide focuses on supporting intentional dialogue about diversity, equity, and inclusion. As essential as these terms are for bridging the gaps that impact mental health, they are also often misused and misunderstood. This guide addresses the role of the MHTTC Network as a vehicle to promote and implement DEI principles in behavioral health practices. National Substance Use and Mental Health Services Survey (N-SUMHSS) 2022: Data on Substance Use and Mental Health Treatment Facilities
The N-SUMHSS is a voluntary annual survey of all active substance use and mental health facilities in the United States, its territories, and D.C. The annual report presents findings on the key operational characteristics of substance use and mental health treatment facilities, use of pharmacotherapies, language assistance services, and suicide prevention assistance services.
