As we mark our 15th anniversary, we at Community Advocates Public Policy Institute are recommitting to enhancing our community members’ health, mental health, and wellness to by addressing the harms posed by opioids and other drugs to individuals, families, and communities.


To help us understand how various forms of opioids and other deadly substances find their way into our community and what we can do about it, on November 2, we will host a special night with investigative reporter Ben Westhoff, author of Fentanyl, Inc.: How Rogue Chemists Created the Deadliest Wave of the Opioid Epidemic.

New to Public Health Residency Program 

In partnership with the New to Public Health Residency Program, The Region V Public Health Training Center is offering the opportunity for early career public health professionals to participate in a Region V-sponsored cohort of the New to Public Health Residency Program.


The New to Public Health (N2PH) Residency Program is a workforce development program designed to support new public health professionals over one year. By participating in the N2PH Residency Program over 12 months, residents will build competency for evidence-based public health and confidence for addressing the challenges of public health work.


The N2PH Residency Program is designed for public health professionals within their first year of practice at a governmental (local, tribal, state, or federal) public health organization. Early-career public health professionals working in a public health organization may apply. Deadline to apply is November 15. Questions? Email new2publichealth@son.wisc.edu.

Apply for Next Class of Emerging Leaders Program

Wisconsin DHS Division of Care and Treatment Services is now accepting applications for the 2024 Emerging Leaders Program. This workforce development program is for community-based behavioral health professionals who support underserved communities. There is no cost to participate in this program. Attendance at virtual training sessions scheduled for January, February, March, April, May, and June is required. All participants must complete a project and present it at the graduation ceremony scheduled for September.


Applications are due October 27.

Peer Crisis Survey 

Do you identify as a peer? You are invited to share your expertise! Wisconsin DHS Division of Care and Treatment Services is conducting a 30-question survey to learn more about peers in systems transformation, specifically in crisis models. It will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. The deadline to participate is November 30.

October is Youth Substance Use Prevention Month and Substance Misuse Prevention Month. This year, SAMHSA is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the "Talk. They Hear You." campaign and looking ahead to SAMHSA’s 20th Prevention Day. Its Prevention Month Toolkit includes social media shareables, resources, and links to technical assistance options.

If you or a loved one has been impacted by incarceration, or if you are a community member interested in this topic, these Circles of Support can provide camaraderie and understanding to help you heal. Raising Resilient Kids with Sheri Glucoft Wong

Thursday, October 19

Join REDgen for an evening with Sheri Glucoft Wong to learn about attitudes and approaches that support our children's emotional and social development and encourage their confidence and resilience. This talk is intentionally designed to address children ranging from Preschool-age through High School. There will be a forum for questions after the talk.


In this workshop, you will learn to:

  • Support your children's capacity to handle disappointment and other setbacks
  • Share messages that promote self-esteem and self-reliance
  • Set limits in ways that empower your children and strengthen their confidence
  • Encourage attitudes that translate into social and emotional well-being
  • Partner with school to support your children in their world outside of home

This conference, organized by Wisconsin Department of Health Services and UW-Stevens Point Continuing Education and Outreach, is designed to increase knowledge and skills to promote wellness, prevention, intervention, treatment, recovery, holistic care, and continuous quality improvement with the use of best practices for their community across the lifespan. The deadline to register for the in-person option has passed, but there’s still time to register for the virtual option.

Project Homeless Connect

Project Homeless Connect, organized by United Way of Greater Milwaukee and Waukesha County, is an annual event that brings resources and services together under one roof to best serve those experiencing homelessness. Over 700 guests and 400 volunteers attend Milwaukee Project Homeless Connect for this one-day event. Milwaukee has hosted this event since 2009, and Waukesha had its first event in 2019. Organizers are looking for donors, sponsors, outreach organizations, and volunteers.

Milwaukee Fatherhood Summit 2023 Saturday, October 21

Register now for the 2023 Milwaukee Fatherhood Summit to celebrate the gift of fatherhood and come together to share resources and services.


Resources and services include health literacy (making health information understandable); health screenings, vaccines and testing (COVID-19 included); child support interest debt relief; parenting; driver’s license recovery; employment; education; and more.


Lead host organizations are City of Milwaukee, MKE Fatherhood Initiative, SDC, and WCS.


This summit will be held on Saturday, October 21, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Destiny Youth Plaza, 7220 N. 76th St. It’s free, but registration is required. Raffles, services, and food are included, and $50 will be paid to fathers for survey participation (from UWM). Free pick up and drop off locations will be announced soon.

Stimulants 101: The 6-Hour Curriculum

Six Tuesdays, October 24-November 28 

This 6-hour stimulant training will provide an overview of the impact of stimulant drugs, and current treatment options. The training will include content regarding the impact of stimulants on the brain and body, and a range of data regarding national and regional trends related to stimulant use. It will be held on six consecutive Tuesdays, from 3 to 4 p.m., beginning October 24.

Wisconsin Working Together to Combat Drug Challenges

Held in Oshkosh, this conference is sponsored by the US Department of Justice and the Wisconsin Department of Justice to focus on fentanyl, xylazine, and other emerging substances in our communities. Topics include the dark web, medication assisted treatment, drug-endangered children, and engagement with community-based prevention coalitions.

Improving Behavioral Health Services and Care for Your Sexual and Gender Diverse Clients:

Navigating Letters of Readiness for Clients Seeking Gender-Affirming Care

This training session, organized by Community Advocates Public Policy Institute, is designed to empower mental health professionals and clinicians with the knowledge and skills required to compassionately and effectively navigate letters of readiness for transgender and non-binary clients pursuing gender-affirming healthcare.


As clinicians, it is crucial to provide affirming and supportive care to individuals exploring their gender identity and expression. This session will address key considerations, ethical guidelines, protecting the therapist-client relationship, and helping clinicians to navigate this process sensitively and professionally. It will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on October 26 via Zoom.

Reimagining Recovery

Thursday, October 26

This webinar series explores the structural, social, and root determinants of health, limitations of the brain disease model of addiction, and how criminalizing and punitive approaches to substance use are both normalized and exacerbating the overdose crisis.


Presenters will highlight regional trends in opioid use, emphasize non-punitive strategies to support people who use drugs and/or are living in recovery, including harm reduction, and describe ways that communities can better support people who use drugs and their families. Participants will be encouraged to reimagine their roles and efforts in prevention, treatment, and recovery, to be more aligned with principles of health equity and justice.


This session, sponsored by Michigan State University, will be held from 1 to 2:15 p.m. on October 26.

988 Lifeline’s New American Sign Language Services

The 988 Lifeline added American Sign Language (ASL) services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community to reach trained crisis counselors 24/7. With these new services, Deaf and Hard of Hearing people who need support can dial 988 directly using their videophone or visit 988lifeline.org, select “ASL Now,” and follow the prompts. Use these ASL social media shareables to let your community and network know about the new services, too.

Wisconsin Addiction Recovery Helpline 

The Wisconsin Addiction Recovery Helpline is a statewide resource coordinated by 211 Wisconsin that helps callers find substance use treatment and recovery support services. IMPACT 211, serving Southeast Wisconsin, provides trained resource specialists who can help callers understand how to navigate payment options in the insurance process, as well as remove barriers to accessing services such as lack of transportation. The helpline is free, confidential, and available 24/7. Call 211 or 833-944-4673, or text your zip code to 898211. Get details.
