September is National Suicide Prevention Month, a month to acknowledge the struggle that millions of people around the world experience and to remember the lives lost to the public health crisis that is suicide. It’s a time to advocate for suicide prevention efforts and educate on steps we can all take every day of the year. You can play a role by learning early warning signs, risk factors, and how to talk to someone about mental health.

Internaional Overdose Awareness Day Brought Together Loved Ones, Survivors, and Advocates | |
August 31 marked International Overdose Awareness Day, which gathered community members who have been impacted by overdose. Healing Starts Today organized a fantastic 5K Walk/Run in Veterans Park, and RISE Drug Free MKE organized a community resource fair, tributes, children's activities, and a healing space for loved ones, survivors, and advocates who pledge to never lose another individual to overdose.
Resources were provided by: Celebrate Recovery, Community Medical Services, HIR Wellness, Legal Action of Wisconsin, Milwaukee Fire Department/MORI, Nar-Anon Moms, Nystrom & Associates, Pathfinders, The Phoenix, Rogers Behavioral Health, Safe & Sound, Samad’s House, UMOS, United Community Center, Vin Baker Recovery, Vivent Health, Wauwatosa Health Department, Wisconsin Community Services, and Healing Starts Today.
In the evening of August 31, Light the Hoan lit up Milwaukee's iconic bridge to demonstrate the community's dedication to end overdose.
Prior to the event, on August 29, Milwaukee elected officials and leaders held a press conference to discuss what is being done to combat drug overdose and support those living with a substance use disorder. Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson declared August 31 to be recognized as International Overdose Awareness Day throughout Milwaukee.
A big thank you goes out to all of the organizations and individuals who participated.

Applications Now Open for 2024-2025 School-Based Peer-to-Peer Suicide Prevention Programs | |
Mental Health America of Wisconsin is offering a funding opportunity for elementary, middle, and high schools in Wisconsin. This opportunity is in addition to the Peer-to-Peer Suicide Prevention Grant through the Department of Public Instruction. With a focus on training Wisconsin students to recognize the signs of suicide shown by fellow students, peer-to-peer programs use messages of hope, health, and strength to develop peer leaders and resources for students who may be struggling. Applications are due October 11.

VitalCog Suicide Prevention in the Workplace
Schedule Your Organization's Session to Support Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in September

VitalCog trains organizations to proactively address the early warning signs of suicide in the workplace. This two-hour training gives participants the skills and tools to appreciate the critical need for suicide prevention while creating a forum for dialogue and critical thinking about workplace mental health challenges, and by promoting help-seeking and help-giving.
VitalCog workshops are best conducted in the workplace for groups of 7 to 25, with human resources staff present to discuss available services for employees.

In July, the 53206 Drug Free Communities Project was delighted to invite four Neu-Life Community Development youth to the CADCA Mid-Year Training Institute in Chicago to enable them to sharpen their prevention skills. DVRW is about advocacy, celebrating community, and building power. QPR Question Persuade Refer Suicide Prevention Training

We can all save lives.
The QPR mission is to reduce suicidal behaviors and save lives by providing innovative, practical and proven suicide prevention training. The signs of crisis are all around us. We believe that quality education empowers all people, regardless of their background, to make a positive difference in the life of someone they know.
This two-hour interactive introduction to suicide awareness and prevention will also cover statistics and intervention strategies. In September, Community Advocates Public Policy Institute's QPR workshops will be held on the following dates:

My Ascension Documentary

MC3 is partnering with Charles E. Kubly Foundation to present the impactful documentary "My Ascension," at 1 p.m. on September 10 at the Oriental Theatre, 2230 N. Farwell Ave., Milwaukee. Resources will be available along with a panel discussion after the film. This event is free but registration is required.
About "My Ascension": A suicide attempt left 16-year-old varsity cheerleader, Emma Benoit, paralyzed, but propelled her on a mission to use her painful experience to help others find hope, while shining more light on the suicide epidemic that is taking the lives of 20 young people every day in the United States.
"My Ascension" is a feature-length documentary that chronicles Emma's inspiring journey and quest to walk again; as she works to bring Hope Squad, a school-based suicide prevention program, to Louisiana. The film also highlights the stories of two remarkable young people who tragically did not survive their attempts, and we learn first-hand from their families, friends, school officials, and suicide prevention experts about the devastating effects of suicide.

UW-Milwaukee Military and Veterans Resource Center is offering this suicide prevention and awareness event for members of the military and veterans, including a resource fair, memorial ceremony, walk/run, DJ and music, and much more. It’ll be held at the Harley-Davidson Museum, 400 W. Canal St., Milwaukee, at 9 a.m. A memorial motorcycle ride will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Wisconsin Harley-Davidson, 1280 Blue Ribbon Dr., Oconomowoc.

Voter Registration Assistance

Wisconsin law requires every qualified voter to maintain a current voter registration before voting in an election. If you've never voted in Wisconsin before, haven't voted in the past four years, or your name and/or address has changed since you last voted, you will need to register in order to vote in the upcoming presidential election. Please note that all Wisconsin voters must provide proof of residence/address when registering to vote.

In honor of National Suicide Prevention Month, SAMHSA’s Suicide Prevention Branch is hosting a fireside chat on Black youth suicide prevention, featuring speakers from SAMHSA, young adults with lived experience, and experts in suicide prevention among Black youth. Research shows that from 2018 to 2021, Black individuals aged 10 to 24 experienced a 37% increase in suicides, the largest increase among racial groups. This webinar will highlight the efforts of SAMHSA's Black Youth Suicide Prevention Initiative and focus on actions to support youth in their communities. Don’t miss the opportunity to gain valuable insights from experts and young people about addressing Black youth suicide and learn how to embed equity in suicide prevention efforts. The Self-Determination Conference is one of Wisconsin’s biggest events for people with disabilities and the people who support them. Last year, over 800 people attended the conference. Your support will help provide scholarships, interpreter and translation services, technology and a high-quality in-person experience. Creating Safety When Working with Clients with Substance Use Disorder and Traumatic Stress Disorder
Helping clients recover from trauma begins with creating safety in the home, community, and helping relationships. We can begin by asking clients what would help them feel safe at home and in the community. When clients with histories of trauma and substance use disorder do not feel safe in helping relationships, they often drop out of counseling and continue substance use.
