Creative Expressions 2023 Winners: Celebrating Creativity and Confidence!

We are thrilled to announce the winners of the Creative Expressions 2023 contest! This annual event, which encourages creativity and expression and boosts confidence levels in GSGC Club members, has once again been a tremendous success, thanks to your incredible support.

We are proud of the entries we received and the courage, passion and engagement of all GSGC club members. Each entry deserves celebration!

Moreover, thanks to your generous donations and votes, we managed to raise nearly $10,000. This contribution will help support GSGC girls and boys clubs in 2024 to empower more young minds and nurture their creative spirits.

A Local Event with Global Impact

On a recent, beautiful Saturday evening in Vancouver, Washington, GSGC friends and family celebrated our unique global community and raised funds for our mentorship programs. Many of the locals in attendance have supported our work for years, while others were new to learning about our impact in Southern Africa. Everyone gave generously.

“The evening had such great energy,” said Heather Patrick, who drove down from Seattle for the event. “Everyone seemed so happy to be together supporting the great work of this organization. The success stories that GSGC can tell are deeply moving.”

GSGC Board Member Heidi Johnson Bixby hosted the event and co-emceed with GSGC Founder Priscilla Plummer. Also with us was Wendy Burger, GSGC Chief Operating Officer and a native of South Africa. This was Wendy’s first trip to the United States, and we were lucky to also help celebrate her birthday!

Community defines GSGC and was in full effect for this event. People volunteered their time and talents, and artists donated works for a silent auction. It was wonderful to see the work of accomplished PNW artists side by side with the art of young GSGC club members who participated in our Creative Expressions event earlier this year. A paddle call, matching donations, and a few special items helped bring the evening to a rousing end. To everyone who helped make this event a success, thank you!

Nurturing Minds: Wayi Wayi Clubs Embrace Nature Meditation

Wayi Wayi Girls and Boys Clubs in Livingstone, Zambia embarked on an enlightening journey guided by Sophie Hughes, an artist-in-residence who came to spend some time learning and contributing to Wayi Wayi's inspiring work after completing a Master's in Art and Ecology from Goldsmiths University in the United Kingdom.

Sophie brought her expertise and helped to nurture young minds through meditation sessions, deepening their connection with nature, promoting well-being and environmental awareness. "The program was important for the children to know their connection to nature," said Mentor Sunga Mwila. After meditation, the children expressed their experiences through art and planted an orange tree, further nurturing their minds and the environment.

Empowering Mentors: Social Behavior Change Communication Workshop Builds Capacity

Project Luangwa, home to 20 of the Girls and Boys Clubs we support, recently held their inaugural Social Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) workshop for their dedicated Mentors. Led by an external facilitator from Restless Development, this workshop empowers mentors with the skills to foster positive change in their communities. Mentor Prisca Sakala from Yosefe Girls Club in Zambia shared her thoughts: "I left the training feeling confident and ready to share my newly acquired knowledge with others."

Girls Time Club and International Vulture Awareness Day

At a recent outing, Girls Time Club visited Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust (VFWT) for International Vulture Awareness Day! The experience was deeply enriching as girls learned about the vital role vultures play in our ecosystem and the efforts taken to ensure their conservation.

These types of educational, horizon-broadening experiences would not be possible without the efforts of our Mentors. Special thanks also to VFWT for creating awareness and fostering a deeper connection with nature.
