"What Every Family Needs to Know about Opioids" TV Special
The recent WISN 12 News special “What Every Family Needs to Know about Opioids” took a look at the impact and toll the opioid crisis is having on our community, as well as resources that could be used to help. In 2020, Milwaukee County opioid deaths increased by 34% compared to the year before, making it clear the events of lock down, job losses, and other major events caused by the pandemic did not help the opioid crisis.
This special, which was produced by the National Summit on Opioid Awareness, the Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation, DEA 360 Strategy, covered the challenges of recovery, impact of the pandemic, role of law enforcement and personal stories that shared the fight against the opioid crisis. Hannah Lepper, Coordinator of the Southeast Region of the Alliance for Wisconsin Youth, along with Wisconsin AG Josh Kaul, Milwaukee Bucks Assistant Coach Vin Baker, and other guests, shared important information about their work and resources critical to fighting the opioid crisis as a community. To check out the segment, go to WISN 12 News, where you can also find what resources are available to help you or your loved ones who may be struggling with opioids.

FDA Commits to Banning Menthol Cigarettes and Flavored Cigars
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will propose a ban on menthol-flavored cigarettes and all characterizing flavors in cigars. The FDA has come to this decision based on studies and scientific evidence that show that menthol increases the appeal of tobacco, which can lead youth and young adults to be addicted. By doing this, the FDA will reduce the “initiation of smoking” and “address health disparities that are experienced in communities of color, low income populations and LGBTQ+ individuals” who are at risk of using tobacco products.
