Message from the Mayor

Hello neighbors,

As we head into the warmer months, I want to take a moment to highlight an important initiative that will help keep Blue Springs moving forward—our Neighborhood Street Preservation Program. This program is a vital part of our commitment to maintaining safe, drivable and well-maintained streets throughout our community.

Starting this summer and continuing into the fall, you’ll see crews and contractors working in neighborhoods across Blue Springs to resurface streets, seal cracks, repair curbs and extend the life of our roadways. These improvements may not always be flashy, but they’re essential to preserving the infrastructure we all rely on every day.

This year, we’re investing more than ever before in street maintenance, thanks in part to the support of our residents and the careful planning of our Public Works Department. Our goal is not just to fix what’s broken, but to be proactive—making strategic repairs now so we can avoid larger, more expensive problems down the road.

We know that street work can sometimes be inconvenient, and we appreciate your patience as crews work in your area. We’ll continue to provide updates on the City’s website and social media pages so you can stay informed about what to expect and when.

Together, we’re building a better Blue Springs—one street at a time. Thank you for your continued support and for helping us take care of the community we all call home.

Chris Lievsay

Mayor, Blue Springs, Mo.

City News

Know Your City Codes

Over the next several issues of the newsletter, we will provide a series of articles highlighting some of the most common Code Violations in the City of Blue Springs. From overgrown grass to improper parking, we'll break down each Code, why they matter and how you can help keep our community clean, safe and beautiful.

Fireworks

Who doesn’t love celebrating our nation’s birthday: cookouts, games, parties and of course, fireworks. Blue Springs residents should observe the days and hours fireworks are legally allowed to be discharged within City limits. The dates and times are July 1-3, 10 a.m.-11 p.m. and on July 4, 10 a.m.-Midnight.

Police Officers will also exercise increased street patrol and law enforcement measures during these times to make sure residents are complying with the regulations provisioned by the City’s Fireworks Ordinance. To report fireworks violations, call 816-228-0151 or Text-A-Tip; text BSPD plus your message, including the location of the violation to Crimes (274637). For more information, you can view the Code HERE.

Fence, Deck and Pool Construction

Need a fence for your pet? Want to convert that patio to a deck? Would you love to have a pool for those hot summer days? Construction on a fence, deck or pool requires a city building permit. All pools that can hold 24 inches of water or more, including inflatable pools, must have a permit. Please call 816-228-0117 or 816-228-0118 for building permit questions. The reasoning for this Code is to ensure public safety, maintain property values and promote the overall aesthetic appeal of the community. These regulations address potential hazards, structural integrity and compatibility with the surrounding environment. See the Building Code for details. For more information, you can view the Code HERE.

Board of the Month - Historic Preservation Commission

The Historic Preservation Commission acts in an advisory capacity to the City Council, Planning Commission and Senior Director of Community Development in carrying out activities required by City ordinances relating to the administration of the Development Code regarding Historic Landmarks, Historic Districts and Conservation Districts, and of the Sign Code regarding Historic Signs, and makes recommendations to the Mayor and City Council. Meetings are typically held on weekday afternoons approximately five to eight times per year.

The Historic Preservation Commission is comprised of seven members serving three-year terms appointed by the Mayor with consent and approval of the City Council. Members shall demonstrate an interest and knowledge of history, architecture or preservation. In addition, every effort should be made to appoint members with a professional background in architecture, history, archaeology, planning, urban design, geography, anthropology, folklore, curation, conservation, landscape architecture or any other related disciplines or fields related to historic preservation. All members must be residents of the City of Blue Springs.

Two non-voting liaisons are appointed annually; one from the Planning Commission and one from the City Council.

Citizens who desire to serve on a city board or commission may apply by filling out the online Boards and Commissions Application. All meetings are open to the public.
