Nancy Wilson

Senior Support Assistant,

Department of Pediatrics, Community/General, LBJ Hospital

When did you join UTHealth Houston? What brought you here?

I joined The University of Texas McGovern Medical School on October 30, 1979. Dr. Charles Scott was division head of Medical Genetics, and his assistant requested temporary support from the temporary agency I worked with. After working on the first assignment in Medical Genetics, each time the division office needed support, I was requested. After about 2 months working in the division, Dr. Scott asked if I was interested in a full-time position. He offered the job to me, and I accepted the position. I worked in the Pediatric – Medical Genetics Division for approximately 10 years.

In July 1990, the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston stepped in The Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital, and their counterparts from Baylor College of Medicine stepped out. A new full-service hospital was born. I was asked by the Chief of Staff Dr. James Hefner’s office if I would like to come and work with Dr. Virginia Moyer, division head of Community/General Pediatrics. I started working in Pediatrics – Community/General at LBJ Hospital in September 1990 – present.

Tell us about your work history here.

I worked with Dr. Charles Scott and Dr. Jacqueline Hecht in the Medical Genetics Division for 10 years. I was hired as secretary support for the Medical Genetics Division.

I worked for 10 years with Dr. Virginia Moyer after we moved to LBJ General Hospital until Dr. Robert Yetman took over as Community/General Division head.  I continued working with Dr. Moyer at LBJ Hospital until she left the division.  I am the support staff for Dr. Amalia Guardiola housed at LBJ Hospital, pediatric chief residents, attendings, fellows, residents and Division of Neonatology fellows and residents during their rotation at LBJ Hospital. I also support Dr. Jose Garcia, who is the medical director of the pediatric clinic.

What are you most proud of accomplishing?  I am proud of being able to continuously execute the various demands of this job. In addition, it is gratifying witnessing generations of doctors from the beginning to the end of their rotations and accepting a job offer.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

I enjoy assisting the doctors as they strive to serve the children of our community through health care.

Why have you stayed?

I have stayed at this job because of the stability, enjoying my role and the various challenges and responsibilities I’ve had to manage over the years that have kept me engaged with the job.

When you are not at work, how do you spend your time?

During my off time, I enjoy relaxing and doing things with my family. I enjoy reading, listening to music and exercising (walking).
