Old Dominion University Launches
Start by Believing Campaign!
After months of planning and preparation, Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, VA, launched a campus wide Start by Believing Campaign shortly after students returned to class in September. The beginning of the school year, commonly known as the Red Zone, is a high-risk time for campus sexual assault among first- and second-year students. ODU is leading the way by ensuring students, faculty, and staff are prepared to respond with support and empathy.
The university created a campus specific Start by Believing Video to explain the campaign and connect with their students. Take a look!
Banners, signs and posters were also spread across campus, informing students that it’s safe to disclose. This promotional material features QR codes that link directly to ODU Police Department’s newly created Start by Believing webpage.

They also purchased billboard space near one of the bars close to campus.
Commitment to the Start by Believing Philosophy

ODU Police Department outlines their commitment to transforming personal and professional responses to sexual assault on their website. They also highlight the steps being taken by every officer on campus including required monthly victim-centered and trauma-informed training, and successful completion of exams. Currently, Officers are required to complete these EVAWI Training bulletins:

Their website also features information to better understand trauma as well as additional EVAWI resources such as Start by Believing Training Bulletins, FAQ’s, 10 Reasons to Start by Believing, and What to Say to survivors.
Congratulations ODU on creating a comprehensive campaign, that includes critical steps to truly integrate the Start by Believing philosophy throughout your campus programs and activities!
