NEWS AND EVENTS
Important Information Regarding Serra Reopening Plans
Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we prepare to return to school, we will be sending out important information over the next two weeks. Our goal is to inform you on our policies and procedures in a timely and orderly fashion. Please pay close attention to the news coming from our school. We are in the process of updating our main COVID-19 page on the Serra website, where we will continue to provide a copy of all information sent home.

Travel and Socializing:
We cannot overstate the responsibility that we all share in ensuring that the return to school is successful. As we enter the holiday season, there are many events where we highly recommend that everyone within our school community abide by the travel restrictions and quarantine rules provided by our county. If students have engaged in high risk activities during travel -- such as attending large gatherings, sporting events, concerts, restaurant, airports, theatres -- you should engage in extra precautions for a 14-day period. Toward this end, we will be recommending that parents have their student engage in distance learning for two weeks after travel.

This Saturday is Halloween, a holiday typically spent with groups of people. With our return date of November 9 for our upperclassmen, we are asking our families to celebrate with caution. We encourage all school families and employees to diligently follow the CDC guidelines with regards to social distancing, mask wearing, and health and hygiene guidelines and restrictions on gatherings.

Covid Testing for Faculty/Staff and Students:
The county is requiring that all faculty/staff members be tested for COVID-19 on a monthly basis. In addition, for the safety of the entire community, Serra is requesting that students planning to attend on-campus instruction be tested for COVID-19 prior to coming to campus.

Families have multiple options for COVID-19 testing. San Mateo is offering free testing for all school-age children Tuesday through Saturday.  You may also use your healthcare provider or other testing service provided near you.

Students should have completed testing with confirmed results no later than Friday, November 5. Please note that testing turnaround times range from two to three days.

Information Webinar:
Serra will host an information webinar for the parents of 11th and 12th grade students on November 5 at 7 p.m. The administrative team will give an overview of plans for returning to school, including expectations, safety protocols and the details of hybrid teaching and learning. A link to the webinar will be sent to parents next week in Spotlight

Calendar Updates:
We will modify our school schedule for next week, November 2-6, to facilitate final preparations for on-campus instruction. School calendars and schedules are being modified and updated to reflect the schools teaching and learning schedule for the remainder of the calendar year. Please refer to the website for the most current information.

Summary schedule for the week of Nov 2-6.
Sincerely,
Charlie McGrath
Principal

Raising Anti-Racist Kids:
Activating the Next Generation

Join Common Ground on November 10 at 4 p.m. for Raising Anti-Racist Kids with speakers Beverly Daniel Tatum and Allison Briscoe-Smith. Through generations of systemic racism, our nation has failed to protect and value Black children and families. Beyond learning about racism and the inequity that abounds in our communities, the issue of racial justice also requires action.

Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum and Dr. Allison Briscoe-Smith will focus on how we, as parents, can play an active role in building an anti-racist society and supporting a future where all children are valued. Parents will hear practical advice for talking about race and inspiring kids to fight for racial equity.

Feasts of All Saints and All Souls

November 1 and 2 are the Feasts of All Saints and All Souls. These are days in our Catholic tradition where we pray for those people close to us who have died, especially those who have died recently.

At Campus Ministry we are planning a time for prayer for our community for these days and for this we would like your help! If you have a picture of a loved one who has died that has some relationship with Serra, be it as a student/parent/teacher/family member, we would love to include them in our prayers on these special days.

If you would like your loved one included in our prayers, please email a picture and the name of the person to Fr. Michael Liliedahl. We look forward to praying for all of those we know who have died together as a Serra community.
Asbestos Notification 2020-2021
Federal and state laws require that we make written notification to school parents and students about the existence and location of asbestos in our schools. The Archdiocese of San Francisco and Serra High School have participated in a program to identify and control asbestos-containing at Serra. This program is being conducted under the Federal Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) of 1986 and the Asbestos Containing Materials in Schools Rule of 1987 (40 DFR 763)
Inspection of Serra during the summer of 1988 and subsequent three-year re-inspections revealed that there are materials containing asbestos in the building(s). Specific locations in which asbestos was found at Serra are detailed in an asbestos inspection report, which was prepared for Serra and is available for examination in the school office
The Archdiocese has in place an operation and maintenance plan intended to minimize the risk to the students from airborne asbestos. As part of this plan,,the Archdiocese has repaired and/or removed any damaged asbestos contained in building materials and has undertaken a long-term management program, including removal of asbestos materials in locations where such materials might be damaged and asbestos fibers might be released
Copies of the overall Asbestos Management Plan for the Archdiocese, including those portions of the plan applicable to this school, will be made available for examination from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays at Serra or the Archdiocese's Real Property Support Corporation's Building & Construction office located at 1301 Post St. Suite 102, San Francisco,, CA 94109..Copies of the management plan may be obtained from the Archdiocese for a reasonable cost. Please contact your school office or Debbie Ramos at RPSC's Building & Construction Office at (415) 292-0804 for plan availability, cost of copies and time required obtaining copies
As part of the management plan, periodic surveillance and three year re-inspections will take place to maintain a current inventory of the locations and condition of the asbestos containing materials. In order to assist Serra and the Archdiocese in the maintaining the protective covers on the existing asbestos materials and reducing risk of exposure to students and school staff, we request that students not damage any material labeled as continuing asbestos and do not enter areas with signs warning that asbestos is present.
The Archdiocese is committed to a program to reduce the risk of exposure to our students from airborne asbestos. We appreciate your help in our efforts to maintain a safe and healthy environment in our schools.
