Wawa Opens Store in South Jersey

By:  Chris Bishop  |  Phillyburbs.com  |  April 29, 2012

BURLINGTON CITY - Marie Lollar knows something about Wawa on a personal level. "Wawa is excellent," the City Council president said. "My son worked for them for 12 years. ... It taught him responsibility." Lollar said the company, based in Wawa, Pa., is good to its employees and offers incentives. She was among the city officials who gathered Friday morning for the grand opening of the convenience store at the site of a former Acme on Route 130 across from the high school. It had been a long time coming. The former Acme moved to Route 541 in Burlington Township in late 1997. The Route 130 site has been vacant since the building was demolished about 10 years ago. "It's good to see the Route 130 corridor busy again," said Lollar, a longtime resident. "We made sure we did our end of the work," said Mayor Jim Fazzone, adding that it took about four years to see the project completed. Fazzone said Wawa is a strong addition to the business community, as other companies in the neighborhood such as McDonald's and Chevrolet dealership have completed or are undergoing renovations.

New Projects Still Hard to Come By for N.J.'s Builders

By:  Katie Elder  |  NJBIZ.com  |  May 21, 2012

With federal stimulus funding exhausted and state and local governments shrinking their operating budgets, contractors in New Jersey's construction industry are continuing to work through their backlogs more rapidly than replacement projects are coming, according to an indicator that reflects the work to be performed by commercial and industrial contractors in the months ahead.

"This data tells us that the recovery in nonresidential construction will continue to be sputtering and sporadic," said Anirban Basu, chief economist for Associated Builders and Contractors Inc. "Much of New Jersey is suburban, and during this latest economic downturn, New Jersey was impacted much more than anyone could have predicted, and that hit construction the hardest."

Maple Shade Council Discussed Possible New Wawa

By:  Chrissy Dagnelli  |  Journal Register News  |  May 22, 2012

MAPLE SHADE-It was a fairly quiet evening at the last Maple Shade Town Council meeting where topics included a redevelopment plan suggested from Wawa, updates on Woodcrest Avenue field and a discussion on what to do with a state grant.

Tim Prime, attorney for Wawa, approached town council to request authorization to go before the site planning committee and ask about building a Wawa convenience store and fueling station at Lenola Road and Route 38, the site of Classic Chevrolet. Reduced versions of site plans were provided for council to review.

Besides the planned Wawa, there will also be space for another tenant, as there is no use for a portion of the site in the back. Council will review the material and discuss it at a later meeting.

By:  Mike Davis  |  The Times of Trenton  |  June 3, 2012

Hamilton - A year after a Pennsylvania-based developer announced plans to buy and revitalize Suburban Plaza, a fading retail center on Nottingham Way, there remains little clarity about the extent of the changes to be made, and talks are moving slowly on which store will become the anchor tenant.

"There's definitely something cooking, and it's serious," Peter Abrams, the developer, said. "I hope that it happens because it would be good for everybody. It's just moving a little on the slow side." Abrams said late last week he has something in the works for the vacancy-plagued shopping center, but he wasn't ready to disclose much about it, or even to confirm what a leasing agent for Suburban Plaza said in April about demolishing the buildings and starting over.
