Spotlight on Tanya Zigomanis:
Living with an Incurable Cancer
Editor’s Note: The Spotlight section of Myeloma Matters features stories and reflections supplied by members of our community – those living with myeloma, caregivers, healthcare professional – in their words. The views expressed and shared are those of that individual. We hope you enjoy meeting our 2021 Spotlight Stars and your fellow Myeloma Canada community members.

We recognize that everyone’s journey and experience with myeloma is different. If you would like to share your experience in a future issue of Myeloma Matters, please contact us at contact@myeloma.ca.

To all of you who have shared your stories in the past, and those of you who continue to do so today, we are indebted...you are an inspiration.
At age 37, in May 2019, I was diagnosed with myeloma. Since then, I’ve undergone a stem cell transplant and remain on maintenance. That June, I raised $10,000 for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation walk. Then, in September of that same year, I raised over $15,000 for the Myeloma Canada Multiple Myeloma March in Newmarket, which I matched again in October 2020 for the Virtual Myeloma Canada March for which I was also a media spokesperson.
Earlier this year, I joined Myeloma Canada’s Patient Advisory Council as an Ontario representative, and also started the first York Region Myeloma Support Group this spring. In the last year, I launched a Facebook Group called Multiple Myeloma: Stories of Hope and Inspiration, which has seen huge success in having members share their positive myeloma journeys, providing constant reminders of hope for new and long-time myeloma patients.

I’m passionate about spreading myeloma awareness and raising funds for research. Last month on Mother’s Day (my 2-year cancer anniversary) I was featured in the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation summer cottage lottery campaign, which I’d like to share with you today!
