Scams: No End In Sight!

I don’t know exactly what it is (perhaps somebody out there can tell me!), but last month (February 2025) seemed to be a high-water mark of scammers calling, texting, or emailing clients. (And me as well!) Now, are these grifters proliferating because they need the business, or because they’ve found a formula that works and they're coming back for more? Again, the great unknown.

Although the fine points of each hoax varies, there IS one thing they all have in common; they play upon your emotions with scare tactics. You’re going to lose your data! You’ll be locked out of your bank! You just paid for a laptop that’s being shipped somewhere far away! On and on it goes.

Apple's New "Bargain" iPhone: The 16e

Apple's latest iPhone - the 16e (rumored as the iPhone SE4) is due to be available for purchase on Friday February 28th. (Which is the past for anybody reading this, but still in the future for me!)

While there are scores of articles by better tech writers than me (are there any?), the gist of this off-schedule (read; announced via press release, not at an Apple "event" centered around it) iPhone is that it's the "bargain" phone in Apple's arsenal, great for users not overly concerned with camera megapixels, perhaps targeting the youngest and oldest ends of the smartphone demographic.

Not that tech talk impresses users of this type of gadget, but this is Apple's entry into its proprietary C1 modem (as opposed to Qualcomm modems, which are a staple in all the previous iPhones models) and is 5G enabled. (Have I lost you yet?) Yes, and it boasts the latest features - Apple Intelligence, Action Button, 12-hour battery life, on and on.

But the main takeaway is the base model starts at $599 - making it most wallet-friendly member of Apple's current lineup.

March's Quick Tip:

Cleaning Your Spring Cleanup!

Quick Tip

Now that the temperatures have soared above freezing (at least in this part of the world), our minds and bodies morph into enhancing our lives, and that often manifests itself into getting rid of clutter. Which usually involves tech clutter.

But the question that begs to be asked: What to do with these old items?

It depends. Unfortunately, a lot of non-functioning technology will have to be recycled - meaning taken to your local dump, as most municipalities have a tech recycling area.

But - most importantly - don't just dump the tech junk and run. Erasing the data, or disabling the hard drives is vital before ditching these items. You never know what kind of savvy scavenger is picking through the discarded technology at the dump, even though that is generally frowned upon.

News You Can Use!

Happenings in the Apple and tech world that will no doubt impact you!

✋🏻 Talk To The Hand: Been to Whole Foods lately? If so, you've probably seen the "palm scanner" at the self-checkout. if you sign up with Amazon One, you too can pay with your palm, once you set it up! Bonus - using your palm also replaces having to scan your member card.

🌧️ Storm Clouds Ahead: After morphing into X, many users of the platform formerly known as Twitter migrated to BlueSky. I established an account there, and immediately saw that nearly every post was the kind of thing I hide on my Facebook timeline. The fastest exit I ever made since the time I was house shopping years ago, and when I walked in the front door of a decent-looking place, the stank smell of years of a cigarette smoker previously living there hit me in the face, and that was the end of considering that home.

🃏 Know When to Hold 'Em, Know When to Fold 'Em: Every year has had the season of "the foldable iPhone from Apple" chatter. Is 2026 finally going to be the year? T3 weighs in on this pocketful of rumors here.

💸 Nobody is immune to price hikes, including users who sign up for Microsoft Office 365. A recent visit to office.com reveals that the one-user, $69.99/year tier has left the building, leaving the $99.99/year Personal Plan (one user, six installs) and the $129.99/year (for one to six people) as the only options. Looks like anybody renewing will get an unwelcome surprise.
