Refill Spouted Pouch Strategy

There has been a significant shift towards sustainable packaging in the consumer packaged goods CPG industry in recent years. One of the growing trends is the introduction of Refill-Spouted Pouches, which allow consumers to recharge or refill pump or dispensing bottles, effectively creating a partnership between the Bottle and the Re-fill spouted pouch. This trend is gaining traction globally, particularly in the personal and homecare markets, as more and more CPGs are adopting it to build brand loyalty, reduce plastic waste, and support sustainability initiatives. Refill-spouted pouches are environmentally friendly compared to rigid packaging and provide consumers with a convenient and cost-effective alternative. By offering Refill-Spouted Pouches, CPGs are playing their part in protecting the environment, enhancing their brand image, and building customer loyalty by inviting them back to re-purchase the refill. Refill-spouted pouches will continue to be an important part of the future of sustainable packaging.

Making it Possible with Flexible Packaging

This refill trend is particularly prominent globally in the Personal and Home care markets. Still, it has the potential to expand well into other markets that are also under growing pressure to reduce plastic bottle consumption and waste. To date, the plastic bottle industry has focused on down-gauging the thickness of the bottle in the manufacturing process to reduce plastic content. This helped but, in some cases, risked weakening the bottle to the point of nonperformance. When a refill pouch strategy is implemented, the packager can even consider upgrading or investing in the quality and design of their plastic bottles, knowing the plastic bottle's life cycle can be extended substantially in the home due to the refilling process.

Refilling a plastic bottle multiple times reduces plastic bottle consumption and waste. Even if the Refill pouch, when empty, goes to a landfill instead of being recycled, it sacrifices itself to extend the lifecycle of the plastic bottle multiple times, which dramatically reduces its carbon footprint. Refill pouches are now also available in mono-layer structures and are recycle-ready.

Many plastic bottles are elegant, highly functional, and expensive, particularly bottles with pumps and specialty dispensing features. These quality plastic bottles can go around more than once and be refilled as many as 3 - 4 times or more. Many consumers seek ways to contribute toward a more sustainable world, and the Refill strategy offers them this opportunity to contribute toward this goal.

Packaging Systems are available for low, medium, and highspeed spouted pouch packaging.
