Chef Rene Hewitt, culinary instructor, children's book author, and former television cooking host, is coming to the library to read from his book When Mommy Needs Help: Caring and Cooking for their Mother, a heartwarming children's cookbook that weaves together storytelling, simple recipes, kitchen safety, and the joy of showing up for family.

Stick around after story time for coloring pages from the book to take home!

Passport Book Club

Tuesday, July 21 at 11:00 AM

Main Library, Small Program Room

Where will a good book take you next?

The Passport Book Club brings readers together each month to travel vicariously through literature, exploring new countries and cultures one page at a time. This month the group turns to Alain de Botton's The Art of Travel, a witty and philosophical meditation on why we travel, what we're actually looking for when we do, and whether we ever truly find it. Equal parts essay collection and cultural provocation, it's the kind of book that makes you think differently about every trip you've ever taken, and every one you're planning.

Monthly Matinee

Friday, July 17 at 11:00 AM

Main Library, Large Program Room

This month's matinee brings one of literature's most enduring heroines to the screen.

The 2011 adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, directed by Cary Fukunaga and starring Mia Wasikowska, is a visually stunning and emotionally precise rendering of a young woman reckoning with her past while navigating the mysteries of Thornfield Hall and the brooding, complicated man who owns it. Atmospheric, romantic, and beautifully crafted, this is a film that rewards every viewing.

Light refreshments will be served.

Write & Share: Prompts & Projects

Tuesday, July 21 at 6:00 PM

Main Library, Reference Books Room

Every writer needs time to actually write.

Our bi-weekly workshop offers exactly that, a dedicated space to put words on the page alongside fellow writers in a relaxed, no-pressure setting. Whether you're drafting a novel, developing a short story, or simply looking to build a more consistent writing practice, you're welcome here. Themed prompts are sent out to registrants the morning of each session for those looking for a creative spark, but writers working on their own projects are equally at home.

Write & Share is also a natural companion to the library's Monthly Writer's Group, where writers share work and offer feedback toward publication.

Staff Picks

The Myth of the Perfect Mom

by Erin Schlozman

Motherhood comes with a lot of unspoken rules, and most of them are making moms miserable.

Therapist and postpartum wellness specialist Erin Schlozman takes on ten of the most pervasive and damaging myths surrounding new motherhood, from the idea that bonding should be instant to the belief that ambition and good parenting can't coexist, and replaces them with something far more useful: compassion, honesty, and practical guidance rooted in real emotional wellbeing.

Warm, validating, and refreshingly direct, this is a book that reminds new mothers that the birth of a baby is also the birth of a mom, and that mom deserves just as much care and grace as everyone else in the room.

Night Swimming

by Cassandra Newbould

One summer. Every pool in town. And something a little magical waiting at the bottom of one of them.

Aaron Starmer's Night Swimming is a dreamy, tender coming-of-age story about that specific in-between feeling of being done with high school but not quite ready for whatever comes next.

Trevor and Sarah's summer adventure is equal parts romance, restlessness, and quiet wonder, the kind of story that captures what it feels like when an ordinary season starts to shimmer with something you can't quite name.

Perfect for readers who want their summer reads to linger long after the last page.

The Chase

by Jenny Bloomfield

One girl, one ball, and one very eager dog. But blink and suddenly there are two dogs. Then three. Then ten, bounding and leaping and absolutely refusing to give up the chase.

Jenny Bloomfield's infectious read-aloud takes that irresistible pack of pups through the beach, the city, a museum, and beyond, building momentum with every page until even a thundering waterfall can't slow them down.

Pure, joyful chaos from start to finish, this one is guaranteed to have little readers begging for one more round.
