As 2020 comes to a close, the Service in Schools team is taking a moment to think about the new forms service has taken this year. We have expanded our focus to providing resources for service-learning in a remote setting and at-home service projects. Thank you to all of the students doing amazing work supporting our communities! If you are looking for professional learning resources or more ways to do at-home service, check out the Service in Schools resource page. Do you have a topic in mind you would like to see us cover? Let us know at serviceinschools@schools.nyc.gov.
Teens Advocating for Change
This semester, Service in Schools introduced a new virtual program, Teens Advocating for Change (TAC)! Thirty high school students from across the city are learning about community issues and developing advocacy campaigns to address them. Students are participating in six 90-minute group sessions and conducting independent research with their peers. On December 3, TAC students had the opportunity to speak with experts from organizations that address sustainable fashion, housing policy, LGBTQ+ rights, and disability rights. Students interviewed representatives from FABSCRAP, POTS, The Ali Forney Center, and INCLUDEnyc and heard about ways they can support important causes.

School Spotlight
The Service in Schools team heard from Maspeth High School's after-school club, Maspeth Making a Difference. Student members pick up trash in the community, remove graffiti from local structures, and participate in park clean-ups. They have cleaned up Juniper Valley Park, Elmhurst Park, and Frontera Park, among other sites. Additionally, in the winter they will participate in toy drives for families in need and assist senior citizens with snow removal.
The Service in Schools team also heard from MS/HS 223 The Laboratory School of Finance and Technology in the Bronx, where students have launched the school’s first ever virtual tutoring program. 36 students in grades 8-12 and alumni have been trained to provide 68 middle school students with up to five hours of free, one-on-one tutoring services weekly. The students pictured, Danielys (grade 12 tutor) and Diosmari (grade 7 tutee) were among the participants in the program.

Thank you to the students participating in Maspeth Making a Difference and the MS/HS 223 tutoring program for your service to your community!
