No Place For Hate
Over the past several years, Peabody Public Schools has been fortunate to partner with Deborah Coltin, Executive Director of the Lappin Foundation. Debbie has been a tremendous friend to the district, leading workshops for our students and community on the Holocaust, guiding high school students in a tour of the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC, bringing Holocaust survivors to our district to speak with students, and being a thought partner as we engage in activities related to the Holocaust / Genocide Education grant. Most recently, in response to a number of antisemitic incidents in the district and larger community, we called on Debbie to speak with our middle school students regarding the need to do better in building a safe, inclusive community for all. Using a short film on the symbolism of the swastika, and balancing the film, Swastika: Symbol of Hate, with thoughtful conversation about our responsibility for our words and actions, Debbie left our students with both important lessons and a challenge to take action to “be the reason someone belongs.” We are thankful to Debbie for her compassionate leadership and proud of our students for the respect they showed and the thoughtful questions they posed. While there is always more to learn and do, we are grateful for the foundation we are building with our partners.
