Osher Virtual Lecture
Rene' Magritte and Belgian Surrealism
| |
| | Synopsis: The aim of the surrealists was to delve into 'the true workings of the mind', by which they meant the 'unconscious'. Following Freud's revelations on the dream, they explored trances, automatic writing, chance, and dream images. Dali’, Tanguy and Miro' were masters at these ways of challenging reality. That is what the Parisian group that formed around Andrew' Breton were doing during the 20s and 30s. Meanwhile, another surrealist group was forming in Brussels, steered by Paul Nouge'. Theirs was a different approach. Instead of escaping logic and common sense, they used reason against itself. Nouge' for example, showed that something that is not there can be absent in various ways, which seems absurd. Magritte, for his part, dismantled visible reality in a very 'logical' way. He then reassembled it in an alternative and yet still logical manner. He effectively sabotaged the very way in which we undetand the world. On the personal level, this serious-looking bourgeois man in a suit was far from what he seemed, breaking the Law, swindling clients and cheating on his wife. Throughout his life, he was blowing a raspberry at us all, at our certainties and even our sense of common decency. The lecture will explore Magritte's work and his personality, as well as situating him in the story of surrealism.
Presenter: Silvano Levy has published several books on surrealism, with a focus on the Belgian group. Levy has held academic posts at the University of Liverpool, the University of Hull and Keele University, where he was Senior Lectureer and then Reader. He earned his BA at the University of Reading and his PhD at the Univerisity of Kenv at Canterbury.

Q. I've heard the Recreation & Golf Services department is changing their registration software provider. What does that mean if I already have an account and regularly sign up for classes?
A. All current account holders in PerfectMind, with addresses on file, will have their account transferred over to the new registration system provider, CivicRec.
Staff will be trained on how to register customers using the new system. This will be a time for lots of learning and patience as we transition to this new system.
If you'd like to learn more, see article above on CivicRec.

|
Q. What is the Center's cell phone policy?
A. We kindly ask that all individuals using their cell phone for a phone call please step outside.
The hallways in the building act like megaphones for sound and voices are amplified with the tile floors thus making personal calls easily overheard.
Based on this information, we ask that calls are taken outside where phone conversations won't impact others enjoying our shared public spaces such as the Lounge, Lobby, hallways or classrooms.
Thank you for your mindfulness!
