From the desk of our
Executive Director
Dear Friends of Maitri,
In addition to our regular quarterly newsletter articles and updates, I am pleased to share our Fiscal 2015 Annual Report (for the period ended June 30, 2015) reflecting three important trends:
- Maitri's financial performance continues to improve. Revenue is up and spending is down, resulting in an increase in our net assets by more than $160,000. This follows many years of deficits and more modest positive net performance for both fiscal 2013 and 2014. For details, please view our Fiscal 2015 Audited Financial Statements and 990 Tax Form.
- We continue to enhance our nursing care. Following our move to a dual Registered Nurse (RN) staffing model (versus the prior single RN leadership approach), we have migrated from paper-based resident charting to a new Electronic Medical Records platform that integrates with our pharmaceutical platform. This allows for better clinical collaboration and frees nursing staff from manual processes, enabling them to spend more of their time on direct nursing care for our residents.
- Our resident demographics continue to evolve. In fiscal 2015, 64% of our residents were age 51 or older (up from 61% in fiscal 2014). 36% of our residents arrived at Maitri homeless or marginally-housed, up from 31% last year and 28% the year before. Clearly we are serving a much older resident population and many more homeless/marginally-housed individuals than in the past, reflecting the changing face of the epidemic and the evolving needs of our community.
One thing that hasn't changed at Maitri is the love, compassion and dignity that we offer each of our
residents - whether here for end-of-life-care or for medical stabilization. We couldn't do any of this without the support of our dedicated donors, volunteers and staff. Thank you so much for making all of this possible.
Warm regards,
Michael Smithwick
Executive Director
Here's what we have for you in this issue:
Please consider forwarding this newsletter to a friend who may not yet know us. As always, thank you so much for your generous support of Maitri's programs benefiting our residents who struggle every day with advanced AIDS.

Jill Stockwell
Jill Stockwell joined the Maitri board last year after six months on the Development Committee and a year and a half as a spiritual care volunteer. Jill relocated to San Francisco after many years in New York, where she was a Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY) Hospice Care volunteer from 2001-2010. She began as a patient visit volunteer, then became a bereavement counselor, facilitating support groups for grieving individuals. She worked with the bereavement care staff to train and supervise new volunteers. In addition, she volunteered as a Buddhist hospital chaplain at St Luke's Roosevelt and St Luke's emergency room and intensive care units during that time.
|
She became interested in hospice work as a result of living through the onset and spread of the AIDS epidemic in New York City's West Village in the 1980s. "I was just out of college, making my way in the big city, when suddenly about a dozen of my friends contracted the virus and went from fine to dead in six months. It was almost impossible for me to process, and there was little enough support for patients, never mind the bereaved, in the early days of AIDS." The awareness that there was much to be done to help those living with grief and loss eventually led her to volunteer at VNSNY. "For 20 years I just lived with that mad sadness in my past, not dealing with it. Working in hospice with others going through the loss of loved ones helped me heal and framed my vocation for this work."
Her day job is as managing editor, Americas, for Bank of America Merrill Lynch Global Research. Previously, she was a corporate training consultant with The Write Effect, developing and facilitating communications training workshops for Wall Street professionals. Before that, she worked as managing editor, fixed income Research at Morgan Stanley. Her early career was in Wall Street foreign exchange institutional sales. Jill has a BA in journalism and sociology from Syracuse University and an MBA from Thunderbird School of Management. |

Volunteers Antoinette and Pam |
|
Volunteers are at the heart and soul of Maitri. We are so thankful for volunteers that assist our residents and bring cheer to our community.
Volunteers help with all facets of life at Maitri, including taking residents on outings and to medical appointments, sitting with ill or dying residents, helping with administrative projects or fundraising events, and volunteering in our community garden.
Please consider becoming more deeply engaged with Maitri as a volunteer. Our next training weekend for new volunteers is April 15-17. For more information about volunteering, or to get started sooner, please contact Volunteer and Activities Coordinator, Madeleine Mulderrig, (415)558-3004.

BLISS 2016
Maitri Compassionate Care is pleased that Emmy award-winning actor and comedian Leslie Jordan will host this year's BLISS gala and auction!
Leslie Jordan is well known for his success as a dynamic comedic actor, in particular for his roles in "Will & Grace" and "Sordid Lives". He has enjoyed rapturous reviews for his original stage plays (including "My Trip Down the Pink Carpet"), his roles in the off-Broadway production of "The Lucky Guy," the hit movie "The Help," and his HBO special, "Pink Carpet". But this witty Southern Gentleman, born and raised in the conservative Bible Belt of America, is also an esteemed and generous advocate for equal rights. On Sunday May 1, join Leslie Jordan, the Man Dance Company, guitarist Andre Morgan, jazz vocalist Branice McKenzie and other fabulous guest artists in celebrating the healing power of joy.
