Dear friends and colleagues,
As we finish a tumultuous academic year and look to the next, we would like to share our thoughts about the recent uprisings - upheavals that we recognize as being part of a long history of racism and police violence.
The Institute of Arts and Humanities stands with UC San Diego and San Diego communities in mourning the deaths of Tony McDade, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless other black people by police. We condemn these murders and understand they are not exceptional acts of brutality but systemic to the function of police and white supremacy in the United States and beyond.

Virtual Teach In: The Crisis at Otay Mesa Detention Center

The Otay Mesa Detention Center had the largest outbreak of coronavirus among ICE detention centers in the country and the largest in the county of San Diego. Hosted by the the Institute on May 28, 2020, hear activists speak about the conditions inside the prison and what's being done to address the crisis.

UCSD Students Build Archive of Untold Stories, Impact of COVID-19 on Marginalized Communities
|
Students of UC San Diego's "Race and Oral History Project" course witness firsthand the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on San Diego's ethnic communities. Supported in part by the Institute of Arts and Humanities, the course is taught by Yen Le Espiritu (Ethnic Studies) with support from associate director Simeon Man (History) and Luis Alvarez (History).

Current Third World Studies Program will be changing its name to Global South Studies come Fall 2020. "By changing the name, we aim to shift the program to allow students to explore a range of interrelated themes such as inequality, migration, gender, diaspora, climate change, radical politics, post-colonial, and subaltern, though not limited to these concepts." - Babak Rahimi, Global South Studies Program Director

North Torrey Pines Living and Learning Neighborhood

The North Torrey Pines Living and Learning Neighborhood will be the new home for the Institute of Arts and Humanities. With all new residential living spaces, classrooms, administrative buildings, dining, recreation and more, the Living and Learning Neighborhood will be a place of community, collaboration, and creativity.

The Institute of Arts and Humanities emphasizes the value of interdisciplinary thinking in addressing the needs of a complex world. We house 14 undergraduate majors and minors in regional, ethnic, and thematic studies. Our programs equip students to analyze and speak about the past, present, and future with creativity and insight.
