Spring Edition | 2021
The mission of Career Services is to support and empower students and alumni in developing, evaluating, and effectively implementing their career plans. In collaboration with faculty, staff, employers, and community partners, Career Services provides a variety of resources to prepare students and alumni to become career-ready professionals.
Yes, a Career Fair is coming up (faster than you think) in early March and you will be hearing much more about this pivotal event! Therefore, we want you to begin thinking like a recruiter or a hiring manager. Please think about the following (adapted from articles by Flavell and Livingston): 

  • Knowledge of Self—using different strategies when in job search mode such as large organization v. medium v. small organization and what may meet your needs and expectations; know who you are and why you have an interest in a particular field and position
  • Knowledge of Task – Deciding what to emphasize; and
  • Knowledge of Context – Knowing when to use certain strategies based on the position and organization/company under consideration.

You may want to “<<<stretccccchhhhh >>>” a bit and move out of your comfort zone from time to time. For example, think about a medium sized company if you would like to work for a smaller organization; think about a company where you may have more of an opportunity to learn and grow and perhaps take a bit less in pay/salary. In addition, be willing to modify your résumé to emphasize the needs of the organization or to highlight aspects of your employment or key skills. As a strategy, know how the core values of the organization fit into your values and your future needs. Whether in manufacturing, business and management, human services or healthcare, be ready to emphasize how your skills relate to company values. Please keep in mind and Remember, the Five Secrets of the Hire:
  1. Ability & Suitability
  2. Every job involves Problem Solving & Issue Resolution
  3. Professional & Courteous Behavior
  4. Motivation & focused Enthusiasm
  5. Collaboration & Manageability

Graduate Success Stories
Mahvesh, a Goodwin University nursing graduate, found #CareerSuccess by utilizing Career Services throughout her time as a current student. Before completing her BSN degree, she initially contacted Career Services to build a professional résumé and cover letter. In addition, Mahvesh strengthened her career readiness by exploring application requirements and practicing her interview skills by scheduling mock interviews.

After months of dedication and persistence, Mahvesh successfully accepted a position in a nursing residency program at Windham Hospital. Closing Words
As a way of closing the spring 2021 Career Services newsletter and as you prepare for Goodwin’s first Virtual Recruitment Week (VRW) in March, we want to leave you with a reflection on the importance of personal branding. What is a personal brand and why is it relevant to your career journey? 

A personal brand is in many ways similar to that of a corporate brand, for companies such as Nike, Coca-Cola and Amazon. Similarly, a personal brand helps you communicate who you are, what you stand for, your values and how you express those values. As Dr. Sean Gresh, summarizes in an article entitled “10 Tips for Building A Personal Brand and Boost Your Career,” "Personal branding is one’s story.” Your story is integral to boosting your network and finding success on your career journey. As best-selling author and motivational speaker, Kaplan Mobray states in his book, The 10Ks of Personal Branding, “people who make themselves positively memorable are the ones who are most often hired, promoted, valued and positioned for opportunity.” 

So as you prepare for Goodwin's Virtual Recruitment Week or for an upcoming interview, think about what you are doing to make yourself memorable. What are three key points you want an employer to say about you when you leave the room? Lean into and have fun creating your own personal brand!
