Pandemic Impact on Supply Update...

As the pandemic continues to impact all of us we’ve done our best to keep customers updated on the current state of our ability to make and ship products.

As of spring 2021, movement of goods is slow and shipping costs are high. When you need things from abroad it is an even larger challenge. Movement of goods will likely be the last thing to normalize as we come out of the pandemic.

The takeaway for our customers is order things before you need them.
Earth Day 2021

Each year to Celebrate Earth Day, we donate a portion of our profits to organizations working on behalf of our environment.

This year we chose:

· Climate Collaborative a community of businesses from the natural products industry working collaboratively to take bold action to reverse climate change. H&A is proud to be part of this group.

· Raritan Headwaters Association For over 60 years, they have upheld a promise to protect the land and water. We rely on their vigilance.
· Musconetcong Watershed Association Dedicated to protecting and improving the quality of the Musconetcong River and its Watershed, including its natural and cultural resources. They're in our back yard!

·  Project Self-Sufficiency of Sussex County empowers vulnerable families to achieve stability and self-sufficiency through comprehensive programs that build self-confidence and self-reliance. This program is near and dear to many in our community.
Celebrate Herb Day May 1st!

Herb Day celebrates 15 years! A grassroots annual event, Herb Day is an international celebration of herbs and herbal products with independent but related events scattered across the planet. Often we get involved with a regional in-person event, but that will have to wait another year.

We will donate a percentage of our sales the weekend of May 1-2 to United Plant Savers, a wonderful organization that works to protect herbs for future generations.

David Winston on Women’s Health

Women’s health concerns change throughout life’s stages as their bodies mature. Even treating similar issues, the choice of herbs that will best support them may be influenced by their age, constitutional imbalances, underlying health issues, and lifestyle choices.

Commercially available formulas developed by trained herbalists, designed for a relatively narrow aspect of a condition, will provide the best benefits. Herbs are most effective in combination, rather than the allopathic approach of addressing a condition with a single herb as one may do with a pharmaceutical drug.

David Winston’s Students: Where are they Now?

Erin Stewart is a clinical herbalist, aromatherapist and organic gardener in the Pacific Northwest. A recent graduate of David Winston's two year Center for Herbal Studies Program, Erin offers apprenticeship-style training in herbalism and aromatherapy through her online school, Floranella.

March was B Corp Month!

This March, we were part of a global community of more than 3,700 businesses celebrating what it means to be a Certified B Corporation. We spent some time raising awareness for what makes a #BetterBusiness.

B Corps do business differently. They are for-profit companies leading a movement to use the power of business to solve our most pressing global challenges. B Corps meet the highest verified standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability to all of their stakeholders. They are therefore better for the community, customers, and the planet.

Did You Know? Herbalist & Alchemist was the first herbal supplements company to become a Certified B Corporation in 2010. Learn about our journey and more of what it means to be a #CertifiedBCorp here.

Congrats to Jessica Baijnauth, who won a Bitters Spray Sampler Kit as part of the B Corp “B Engaged” Social Media Giveaway.
Media update

David Winston will give the keynote presentation for the NutraIngredients-USA web seminar Botanicals for Immunity: The Adaptogen Opportunity on May 19.

HerbalGram published an excellent in-depth article last year about the impact of the pandemic on the herbal products world. They recently published an update, because if there is anything that defines the last 14 months, it’s change:

The Healing Herb is a documentary about herbal medicine and some notable practitioners, including David Winston.

We mention wildcrafting often because we get many herbs from people who harvest them in the wild. We recommend this video interview with our friend and colleague Ed Fletcher from Whole Foods magazine for those who want to know more about wildcrafting and sustainability.
