I want to start this devotional thought by asking you a poignant question: Is it worth it?
I mean, really? Let us lay aside the façade. The Sabbath clothes. The pastoral spouse privileges. I am sure you can, like the familiar hymn, "name them one by one" ….seriously! And ask yourself again, is it worth it?
The reality is your spouse's job is subjectively hard. You will be criticized, advised, publicly shamed, praised but talked about at the Sabbath lunch table and more. And where does this leave you?
Undoubtedly, we are warned in Scripture that in the last days humanity will have a form of godliness but be “unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good…” (2 Timothy 3:2, 3, NKJV). We are ministering in hard days!
Is it worth it?
No doubt there are perks. Flexible hours. Working for the Lord. Serving and working with amazing people. Seeing individuals come to know Christ! Changed lives!! And the list goes on.
In my experience of standing by my husband these 37 years in ministry, there is no greater joy than knowing God is changing lives.
Christian author Lysa Terkurst states: "We will steer where we stare." So, here is my next question: What are we focusing on in ministry? The joys or the sorrows? Because that, my friend, will reveal the answer to our "Is it worth it?" question.
Our focus determines our destination.
I hope you will join me in saying, "No matter the challenges, the pain, the accusations, and more, it is worth it."
"Well done!" is what we all long to hear. May you and I be found faithful until He comes.
If you find yourself saying more frequently than you care to admit, "It is not worth it," these resources are available for you to get help.

The wives of ministers should live devoted, prayerful lives.....If they would only lean confidingly, in childlike trust, upon God, and have their affections centered in Jesus, deriving their life from Christ, the living Vine, what an amount of good they might do, what a help they might be to others, what a support to their husbands; and what a reward would be theirs in the end! “Well done, good and faithful servant,” would fall like sweetest music upon their ears. The words, “Enter thou into the joy of thy Lord,” would repay them a thousand times for all the suffering and trials endured to save precious souls. GW 202, 203 EG White

I would like to introduce you to Lisha Akins, who comes to us from Marietta, Georgia, and now is serving alongside her husband Gillis, who pastors in Celina, Tennessee.
Lisha was born in Atlanta, Georgia. She attended Georgia Cumberland Academy, and Southwestern Adventist University. She is presently a homemaker.
Lisha says: "December 1977, I became a Seventh-day Adventist through a Kenneth Cox evangelistic seminar. My father's co-worker invited him to the four-week series of meetings. My parents and I attended the meetings each night. I invited my best friend who also attended each night with great enthusiasm. We were all fascinated with the Bible truths we were learning. We marveled at how we had missed the Sabbath truth and God's commandment when it was so visible in the Bible. At the end of the seminar my parents and I decided to get baptized. Sadly, my best friend did not choose to go forward. However, on the morning of the baptism, we were surprised by a visit from my only sibling, a college student, who at hearing the lost compelling message decided also to be baptized! I thank God for Kenneth Cox and the simple invitation to attend the seminar by my father's co-worker.
Lisha shares this about how she and Gillis met: "My husband and I met at Southwestern Adventist College. We first met in the library. My husband came over to me and introduced himself. He seemed nice and friendly. I also thought he was handsome, but I determined not to smile at him when I saw him approaching. On the contrary, he says all I did was smile. We had fun doing simple things like going on long walks, feeding ducks at the pond, attending church, and visiting friends and family. He was easy to talk to, and we laughed a lot. We quickly noticed how peacefully we studied and worked together and under trying circumstances we both maintained a calmness and productivity that I thought was remarkable. We loved each other easily and without a lot of complications. We knew from week three in the relationship that we'd one day unite in marriage."
They have three adult children: Ashley, Lane, and Caleb.
Some of Lisha's special interests are decorating and design, reading, sewing, bargain hunting, writing, and hostessing. She has special interest in door to-door evangelism, Sabbath School development, and assisting her husband, Gil.
As a family, she and Gillis enjoy traveling in and out of the US. They have fun cooking up new dishes, and dining out eating multi-cultural, plant-based meals. They also enjoy exercising, touring national parks, and completing puzzles on special occasions.
She shares one of her favorite Bible verses: "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen". Matthew 28: 19, 20 (KJV)
Lisha, thank you for being a part of the Kentucky-Tennessee Conference! May God bless you and Gillis in your ministry together for Christ. We look forward to meeting you in person one day soon!

My mom is a great cook. She loved to cook for us, and I am sure she has this talent from God. I am from a big family and I have seven siblings. We always needed to cook a lot, and very often when we were little, we were helping our mom to cook--especially the girls. Mom always invited us to be with her while she cooked for us to learn and help. Sometimes she just allowed us to cook by ourselves to let us be creative and feel comfortable to cook without her help. And it really helped to feel this responsibility to cook for the whole family and day by day building this love of cooking. Mom always taught us to cook the food with love and passion, and that way the food will be even better! I started to be independent in cooking when I was eight years old, and I loved to please my brothers and sisters, and especially my parents.
I remember a lot of moms were asking my mom for advice on how to cook, and I always felt proud of my mom and I wanted to be like her. And many times when we were at our friends' houses or anywhere, people saw the talent in all of us and they weren’t surprised, because they knew whose kids we are.
I am very thankful for my family, and all the effort my parents have been doing for us.
Speaking personally, my mom put her love of cooking in me.
