DIRECTOR'S COLUMN
Meryl Dorf, Ph.D.

I am pleased to say that CPPNJ is thriving. Attendance at our recent conferences, and registration numbers for our courses remains high. As this Newsletter goes to press, we are about to gather at Graduation, to honor the accomplishments of 16 people who have earned Certificates of Completion from the Couples Program, the Postgraduate Training in Psychodynamic Clinical Practice Program, the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program, and the Psychoanalysis Program. It is a tribute to their hard work, as well as to the Instructors, Supervisors and Training Analysts, Training Committee and Board who have given their time and dedication, that we have such a large and growing group of celebrants.
I want to acknowledge the members of all the CPPNJ committees, who volunteer and work hard to make our Institute a warm, stimulating and valued intellectual community. The Board, the Training Committee, the Candidates' Organization, the Program Committee, the Affiliate and Student Committee, the Psychotherapy Center and the Newsletter, all work due to the efforts of individuals who have stepped up to make them happen. Yet still, we need to fill some seats and create new committees. Please consider throwing your hat in the ring!
Dr. Jonathan Lebolt is our new Director of Continuing Education at CPPNJ. We are very excited to welcome him in this role. Dr. Lebolt brings extensive experience from his work at ICP&P in Washington DC, and is generously giving of his time and knowledge to expand the opportunities for CPPNJ’s Continuing Education offerings. The wisdom he gained from six years on the CE Committee, which included two years as Chair, is invaluable to us. He will need an active committee to help him implement guidelines and new initiatives!
We have an exciting year in store with some changes that improve the format of the Curriculum. It allows us to offer more courses and introduce candidates to a variety of Instructors. CPPNJ is a work in progress. Like fine wine, we improve with age! As "Motivator-in-Chief" I will persistently encourage everyone to pitch in and be part of clarifying the wine!

DIVISION 39 CONFERENCE : 4 CPPNJ Members attend
April 26-29, 2023 at Hilton Midtown, NYC
|
|
This year, the Division 39 conference was entitled, “Our Beautiful Struggle,” taking its title from a letter written by Freud to Jung in September 1907, “One day, in retrospect, the years of struggle will strike you as the most beautiful.” The theme of this conference is inspired by Fanon, who wrote in 1976, “Every time a man has contributed to the victory of the dignity of the spirit, every time a man has said no to an attempt to subjugate his fellows, I have felt solidarity with his act.”
The Conference was different from others, and so engaging, that we decided to share a sense of the spirit of the weekend from those who attended. It captures a growing focus in the field of psychoanalysis across the country.

Ruth Lijtmaer, Ph.D. presented as part of a panel: Where is Our Humanity? Three Latina women psychoanalysts discuss dehumanization, gender and immigration.
From different geographical locations, one presenter in the United States addressed how dehumanization takes place (Ruth Lijtmaer); the second presenter living on the border of Mexico and the United States (Tijuana-San Diego) as a “Trans-border” therapist (Adriana Cuenca-Carrara) discussed dehumanization of migrant women; and the third presenter living in Mexico City (Anne Marie Maxwell) addressed gender violence.
They were concerned about the continuous threats of the loss of women's rights, the loss of democracy, a virus that does not disappear, climate change, human rights violations and the treatment of people of color, "the other", and immigrants, and are questioning how dehumanization is sustained by power. The dehumanization of immigrants opens the door to cruelty and violence. Women are also dehumanized by being objectified. When men objectify women they perceive them as things, rather than human beings, as desirable flesh rather than human subjects. From a psychoanalytically informed perspective presenters aim to expand our cultural sensitivity in order to improve our cultural competence in clinical work.
