QUICKBOOKS DESKTOP POINT OF SALE SOFTWARE DISCONTINUED - NO FUTURE VERSIONS AVAILABLE!
On February 23rd, 2023 Intuit announced the Discontinuation of QuickBooks Desktop (QBD) Point of Sale software. Support for QBDT Point of Sale and the integrated payment processor will continue until September 30, 2023.

The QBD Point of Sale program was introduced in 2002 and has been used in retail businesses where QBD was the accounting software. While QBD Point of Sale is Windows based and would only integrate with QBD accounting software, there are many other solutions out there that will integrate with various accounting packages.

The link below will be helpful to people currently using the QBD Point of Sale and offers options and solutions for moving forward.
Is QuickBooks Desktop Dead?
In February I attended a webinar conducted by a group well known in the Intuit and QuickBooks "ecosystem". The Woodard Group doesn't really say if it's dead because none of us know. Joe Woodard actually asks the question another way: "What is the Relevance of QuickBooks Desktop in the Cloud Age?"
During the webinar Joe focuses on the question of relevancy. Not necessarily the question of relevancy to us, but whether or not the product QuickBooks Desktop Software (QBD) is relevant to Intuit. In this chart we can see that Intuit relates revenues to certain "ERAS" in it's history. Here we see that the "ERA of Windows" was in the 1990's and by the 2000's they were moving on. Has QBD been "Dead" to Intuit for a couple of decades now? It certainly appears that this is a possibility.
Intuit's goals for 2025 are indeed bold. While we only think of QuickBooks when we think of Intuit, they have many products under their belt and acquire more every year. Their own website lists TurboTax first, then Credit Karma, Mint, THEN QuickBooks and finally, their newest acquisition MailChimp. This doesn't even take into account the various online services that fall under the "QuickBooks" platform.
How long will QBD remain relevant to Intuit? That is the unknown. The chart below is representative of what currently drives their decision making process. The world of technology is showing no signs of leveling out or slowing down. We can bet on the fact that Intuit is making decisions that benefit Intuit.

With the recent decision to remove the QBD Point of Sale from the line of products, a critical look at the decisions to "disengage" with long time Intuit ProAdvisors and Desktop supporters and a realistic review of what is relevant to Intuit in terms of cost and revenues, I am of the opinion that while QBD is not dead yet . . . . . the end is coming.
Everything presented in the webinar and here in my newsletter is based on opinion of the presenter and my personal opinion. There are many opinions out there and we won't know until Intuit announces their intention if or when QBD will be eliminated as a product offering.

At the end of the webinar, a poll was taken and this is the opinion of my peers and webinar attendees in February. What do you think?
SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO YOU AND WHAT WILL YOU DO NEXT?
I think that it is a foregone conclusion that you might need to make changes to your current accounting operations in the future if you are still on QBD. When will you need to make these changes though? Will it happen before or after your plans to retire? Sell the business? Will you be caught having to make these decisions during a particularly busy year? These are all factors that might affect you and it is certainly a decision that only you can make.

I have more than a few clients who have outgrown the capabilities of QuickBooks Desktop (QBD) as a business management software. These clients have moved operations and/or accounts receivable, accounts payable and more out of their accounting system into more industry driven applications, all cloud based at this point. Some of these clients are also poised to make the jump to QuickBooks Online (QBO) at some time in the near future.

There are many options out there for operational and/or function focused software. Finding the one that will work for you is critical to your company's health and growth. As an accountant, I am here to assist with the transition of the accounting system and the integration of outside applications to the accounting. But I do not have the knowledge of your day to day operations that is critical to finding the solutions for your individual operations and daily business management.

If there is a guideline that I firmly adhere to and has always been successful in my opinion, finding solutions where information is entered only once is critical to maximum productivity and accuracy in reporting and financial information. It worked for small businesses using QBD stand-alone as their business management tool and all encompassing operations and it's a proven practice.

QBO and AI driven processes certainly improve productivity and reduce the possibility for errors. Manually transferring information in and out of multiple systems including excel worksheets and proprietary systems is a stressful process. It is also time consuming and prone to mistakes and errors. Maintaining internal servers is costly and while it keeps people out of the accounting system who don't need access and shares information with internal employees who need operations information, it creates other problems without the capability for automated integration. Integration is the basis of "app-stacking" and in my opinion, QBO does a better job of this than QBD. Creating an Application Stack or group of software programs that work together to manage your daily operations and produce financial data and reports for your business is efficient and has multiple side benefits.

It is my personal intention to make you aware of what is changing at Intuit, how it might affect you and my personal opinion on all of the subjects presented here. Please know that CLN Consulting Associates won't be around forever and I certainly don't want my clients to feel that I didn't give them enough warning or notice of the possibilities.

Yes . . . . possibilities and maybe even opportunities. Opportunities for improvements to your business, your life and your employees lives. If and or when you are ready for these conversations with the intention to begin the research for changes to your accounting operations, please feel free to reach out to me.
QUICKBOOKS DESKTOP 2020 SERVICE DISCONTINUATION POLICY
Your access to QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Services, Live Support, Online Backup, Online Banking, and other services through QuickBooks Desktop 2020 software will be discontinued after May 31, 2023. This also means you won't receive critical security updates starting June 1, 2023.

CREDIT CARD AND BANKING DOWNLOADS ARE CHANGING
To accommodate the constantly evolving changes to security protocols in the banking industry, there have been changes to the methods and ability to easily download credit card and banking information to QBD products. Artificial Intelligence (AI) in bookkeeping and accounting is forcing higher levels of precaution across all industries. Chase Bank was the first to make changes a couple of months ago followed by American Express effective 3/31/2023.

I am now seeing problems and errors across the board with many financial institutions as Intuit makes changes in the software to facilitate the new protocols. Needless to say, I am seeing more strides in the QBO platform to work through these problems. Please let me know if you are having issues and I can share what I have learned to date.
