The following individuals were recognized at the UNMC College of Dentistry Alumni Association’s 2022 Alumni Reunion Banquet held on Oct. 28.

2022 Outstanding Educator Award:
James F. Jenkins, DDS ’84

2022 Distinguished Service Award:
John Reinhardt, DDS, MS, MPH

2022 Alumni Achievement Award:
Richard A. Reinhardt, DDS ’72, PhD ’87

2022 Honorary Life Membership Award:
Sreenivas Koka, DDS, PhD ’99

Remembering dentistry Dean Henry Cherrick

Henry Cherrick, DDS, a professor of oral pathology who served as dean of the UNMC College of Dentistry from 1981 to 1988, died on Jan. 24 in Davie, Florida.
Dr. Cherrick was integral to the UNMC College of Dentistry’s history of excellence.

Dr. Sreenivas Koka inspires others to make a difference in patients’ lives

Sreenivas Koka, DDS, MS, PhD, MBA ’99, a former UNMC College of Dentistry faculty member and an alum, returned to the college to present “Patient Care that Makes a Profound Difference” during the 2022 Alumni Reunion Weekend, held Oct. 28-29.

“I hope my presentation led the audience to reflect on what really matters in life. For example, focusing on feelings like love and kindness, as well as making each day count because time is so precious,” Koka said.

Dr. Po-Jung Chen receives prestigious national research awards

Po-Jung Chen, DDS, MDS, MDentSc, an assistant professor in the department of growth and development, will receive two prestigious national honors in April:

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) Milo Hellman Research Award, which is given for the most outstanding and meritorious research project completed in orthodontics in 2022; and

The American Society of Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) John Haddad Young Investigator Award.

Dr. Ali Nawshad receives UNMC Faculty Diversity Fund award

Ali Nawshad, PhD, a professor in the department of oral biology, was recently selected to receive a two-year, $85,000 award from the UNMC Faculty Diversity Fund.

Dr. Nawshad’s research project is aimed at understanding the role of maternal cigarette smoking in cleft palate formation.

Dr. Sumit Yadav to join the College of Dentistry

Sumit Yadav, BDS, MDS, PhD, MBA, will join the college as chair of the department of growth and development.

Dr. Upoma Guha joins the College of Dentistry

Upoma Guha, BDS, MS, is an associate professor in the department of adult restorative dentistry.

Dr. Sarah Lowman named assistant dean for admissions

Sarah Lowman, DDS, MPH, an assistant professor in the department of growth and development, has been named the college’s assistant dean for admissions. In this role, she will work to advance the college’s admissions program.

Lisa Moravec presents at prestigious International Symposium on Dental Hygiene

Lisa Moravec, RDH, MS, an associate professor in the department of dental hygiene and coordinator of the West Division Dental Hygiene Program, was part of a select group of oral health professionals invited to present at the prestigious International Symposium on Dental Hygiene held in Dublin, Ireland.
