Spring 2024 | Breaking Ground:

On the Homefront with Kansas Housing

Growing up an 80s child, I fondly remember hours of Nintendo bliss: Mario Brothers, Duck Hunt, and my favorite – Tetris. I vividly recall laughing at my mom trying to play Tetris, her hands bouncing up and down as she willed the colorful blocks to seamlessly land as the music played faster and the panic set in. I’m sweating just thinking about it!

Fast forward and Tetris made the news again with a 13-year old from Oklahoma believed to be the first person ever to beat the original game and in a mere 39 minutes! Quite an accomplishment.

The challenge of Tetris was the uncertainty of what the game would throw at the player. Every time you developed a plan and waited for the piece you needed, Tetris hurled something new, something different, daring the player to somehow make it fit while there’s still time.

Isn’t that our housing work in a nutshell? Every time we develop a strategy or plan, a new piece is hurled at us: whether it’s rising construction costs and interest rates, policy changes in Washington or Topeka, a natural or human disaster… the music speeds up …. the game becomes more challenging.

Yet KHRC and our stakeholder partners take a deep breath, find the right fit for the latest challenging block, and ultimately keep driving up the housing score, one home at a time. No worries – we’ve got this! Keep Unlocking Home.

HFA1 Affordable Homeownership Lender Toolkit

During the month of January, the Kansas First Time Homebuyer program was added to the NCSHA HFA1 Affordable Homeownership Lender Toolkit.

The National Council of State Housing Agencies and state Housing Finance Agencies (HFAs)  have developed free online tools that enable lenders to partner more easily with HFAs in providing affordable home mortgage loans and down payment assistance to lower-income home buyers. The tools identify the key features of HFA homeownership programs that are most important for lenders, allowing easier collaboration between lenders and HFAS like KHRC.

Using these new, comparative resources, lenders serving participating markets can:

  • Understand the key features of the aligned homeownership program in each state
  • Assess opportunities to partner more efficiently with those programs
  • More easily serve lower-income home buyers across multiple states.
