Safety First: Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Toolkit

As electric vehicles and battery-powered devices become more common in recycling streams, so do the risks. ReMA has developed a new Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Toolkit to help facilities prevent fires and handle hazardous materials safely.

The toolkit includes:

  • Proper inspection and sorting protocols
  • Best practices for storage and transportation
  • Employee training resources

Prioritize safety and stay ahead of emerging risks.

New England Chapter Heads to Capitol Hill!

This February, New England Chapter members joined recyclers from across the country for ReMA’s 2025 Congressional Fly-In in Washington, D.C.

Highlights included:

  • Fly-In Training at the Watergate Hotel
  • Morning guest speaker and breakfast
  • Meetings with Congressional offices on:
  • Strengthening market access
  • Building resilient supply chains

Legislative Advocacy Update: Battery Recycling in Connecticut

The New England Chapter is actively engaged in critical legislative efforts surrounding HB 5019 in Connecticut, a bill aimed at establishing an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program for consumer batteries.

Our coalition, working alongside ReMA, has pushed for key amendments to ensure the bill recognizes the vital role recyclers play in battery management, promotes safe practices, and supports market innovation.

Key goals of our engagement:

  • Ensure recyclers have a seat at the table in shaping battery recycling programs.
  • Require stewardship organizations to coordinate with certified advanced battery recyclers.
  • Promote flexibility for collection sites and recyclers, allowing safe and effective battery handling.
  • Oppose monopolization by a single nonprofit collector, advocating for broader industry participation.

Our coalition also worked directly with Rep. Joe Gresko, the bill’s sponsor, to advocate for a stronger, more effective program.

The primary message: Recyclers must be partners—not afterthoughts—in crafting a system that truly improves safety, education, circularity, and market access.

Additionally, we are aligned with feedback from the National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA), which has called for immediate action to reduce lithium-ion battery fires and encouraged bolstering current drop-off programs while broader legislation is finalized.

A huge thank you to all New England Chapter members in CT who contributed their voices to this pivotal effort—you are helping to shape a safer, stronger future for battery recycling!

Member Spotlight: Jason Learning Success

Thanks to our chapter’s partnership with Jason Learning, this spring we had a fantastic opportunity to connect students directly with the recycling industry!

On March 13, HW Green Co. hosted students and staff from Charles F. Hayden School (Boys and Girls Village | Milford, CT) for a facility tour. Thank you to Krista Ostuno and Michele Harnois for helping organize this meaningful experience!

The students were highly engaged throughout the tour—several even expressed interest in pursuing careers in recycling.

Their teacher shared: "Our students rarely get experiences like yesterday. Thank you for your time, generosity, and for sharing your expertise. It was a very meaningful experience—and we look forward to staying connected in the future!"

In addition to the visit, the school submitted over 14 entries to Jason Learning’s national Poster/Video Contest, demonstrating their excitement and commitment to learning about recycling.

We will continue to work with Jason Learning on future sponsorships and educational initiatives. Thank you to everyone who helped make this program a success!

Fun Fact: Steel Recycling Power

Did you know? Steel is the most recycled material in North America — more than paper, plastic, aluminum, and glass combined. Every ton of recycled steel saves 2,500 pounds of iron ore, 1,400 pounds of coal, and 120 pounds of limestone.

Stay connected for more updates, and thank you for your continued support of the ReMA New England Chapter!
