Bicycle Safety Month in Chatham County

Safe Routes to School hosted three bicycle safety weeks at elementary schools across Chatham County this past spring. Bicycle safety week included sessions in every Kindergarten and 2nd grade Healthful Living class where students learned how to properly wear a helmet and obey traffic signs before practicing their safety skills on a bicycle track with urban features and loaner bicycles. A huge thanks to our partners from Chatham County Schools, Chatham County Parks & Recreation, the Safe Kids Chatham coalition, and the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office to coordinate and staff these events!

Bicycle safety rodeos this summer!

We're underway with our summertime programming, including our bicycle rodeos at Efland-Cheeks Community Center last month and our upcoming rodeos at Central Carolina Boys & Girls Club's Siler City location and Chatham County Parks and Recreation Silk Hope summer camp.

Bringing All Kids Bike to Chatham County

SRTS has applied for grant funding to purchase an All Kids Bike curriculum program for Chatham County Schools to use, where all Kindergartners in the county will learn how to ride a bicycle in their Healthful Living class using Strider balance bicycles. This delivery method is designed to reduce barriers to entry many schools across the county face in participating in our current bicycle safety week programming, including streamlining the instruction process for teachers and the logistical process for the school district.

Call to Action

If you'd like to see any of the activities described above in your community, contact SRTS Program Coordinator Andres Otero (aotero@centralpinesnc.gov) for more details!
