Las Casas Community Fair: Building Connections

On Monday, March 17th, our school was bustling with activity. 15 local immigrant service organizations and 200 attendees (including our students, their families, volunteer teachers, and local Fruitvale residents) attended for a night of connection, community and collaboration. This was our 3rd annual fair and it was a resounding success. Our fairs connect our students to the critical services they need and create space for collaboration among Fruitvale organizations that do important work in the immigrant community.

This year, with so much fear and uncertainty in our immigrant community, Las Casas is committed to creating space for our students to connect with the amazing organizations offering legal, immigration, housing, health, education, and other critical services. Our Fair was made possible by the support of our sponsors and help from our team of dedicated volunteers. We would like to give special thanks and recognition to our sponsors: Ann Marie Heffernan, Arns Davis Law, Oakland Chevrolet, Piedmont Pediatric Dentistry, Las Casas Advisory Board, Oakland Roots, Mariposa Baking Co., RIDE Oakland, Rich Products and Oakland Catholic Worker. We also want to thank Cristo Rey de la Salle High School for their continued support and willingness to host and support this important event.

Here is a list of this year's participating partner organizations who do so much for the community in Oakland: College of Alameda, Cristo Rey de la Salle High School, East Bay Sanctuary Covenant, El Tímpano, La Clínica/Casa CHE, Laney College, Oakland Catholic Worker, Oakland Public Library, Order of Malta Clinic, Spanish Speaking Citizens' Foundation, The Unity Council, Trabajadores Unidos Workers United and the East Bay Regional Parks Department!

Know Your Rights

The Trump administration's anti-immigrant stance and ever-changing immigration policies have created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty in our immigrant community. At Las Casas, we're helping our students understand their rights, get access to legal resources and be prepared in the event of an interaction with ICE.

We have partnered with the East Bay Sanctuary Covenant and El Tímpano, who provide us with critical resources and training materials and have hosted Know Your Rights and Disinformation workshops for our students. We've distributed hundreds of the ILRC's red cards, which empower immigrants to exercise their rights in the face of ICE. We've created an Immigration Resource page on our website and continue to promote Know Your Rights workshops around the Bay Area. We are steadfast in our mission to create a space where our students feel safe and supported and are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve. Please visit our website for more information on critical immigration resources in our community.

Volunteer Spotlight

Two nights a week you can find dedicated teacher-volunteer Ani Braude leading one of our largest classes - Beginning Low. Ani started volunteering with Las Casas in 2022 after learning about our program from a guest speaker in her linguistics class!

Ani was born in Oakland and has lived in the East Bay for most of her life. After attending UC Davis, Ani got her TESOL/MA during the Pandemic. When Ani isn’t at Las Casas she can be found working at Mariposa Baking Co. in Oakland. Ani enjoys Las Casas because we provide a fun and welcoming environment for our students to learn and practice English. She loves getting to know her students, seeing them get to know each other, and watching them learn English little by little. “I love the ‘a-ha’ moments where something sort of ‘clicks’ and it’s clear that my student has discovered or understood something new to them.”

Las Casas is grateful for Ani’s commitment to her students and her creative and thoughtful lessons. Our Beginning Low students are so fortunate to have Ani leading them on their journey to learn English!

Cheer on the Oakland Roots/Soul and raise $$ for Las Casas

We are thrilled to share an exciting opportunity to support Las Casas while enjoying an Oakland Roots & Soul SC soccer game! Oakland Roots has been an ongoing supporter of Las Casas, and this season we are excited to join their new 2025 Oakland Roots Community Champions Fundraiser Program.

This program will help us raise funds while our supporters enjoy Roots and Soul games at the Coliseum! You can purchase tickets via the QR Code above and Las Casas will receive 20% of the proceeds! The Oakland Roots has also donated 200 tickets to our students and their families for the May 24th game against New Mexico United. We would love our supporters and friends to join us for that game. If you can’t make the May 24th game, you can still support our students by purchasing a ticket to any game this season with the QR Code provided.

Thank you for your generous support!

Thanks to our wonderful community of supporters, our annual campaign that ended December 31st was our most successful fundraising effort ever. We surpassed our $25,000 goal which will help us meet the needs of our growing program.

Many thanks to our current and former volunteers who went above and beyond by reaching out to their networks of family and friends to raise money. During these challenging times, we depend on our broader community to support us and lift us up. And this year, our supporters definitely responded, allowing us to stay focused on our mission: to help our immigrant community gain the English skills they need to build a better life for themselves in their new country.

As always, please forward this update to family and friends who might be interested in learning more about our work. We only charge our students a small fraction of our overall costs and we depend on the generosity of our community to keep our program strong. Please consider making a donation - we appreciate all gifts of any size!
