01.

Playground Modernization and Outdoor Learning Spaces

RBUSD is planning a new generation of playgrounds featuring natural, wood-based structures designed to encourage creativity, exploration, and active play. These Earthscape playgrounds will be introduced across multiple school sites in phases as planning and design work continues.

PLAYGROUND UPGRADES

Future playground improvements are first planned at the following schools. Elementary schools that are not listed will have other projects completed prior to receiving their new playground, as the construction may impact the playground area.

• Beryl Upper Grades playground
• Birney Upper Grades and Kindergarten
• Lincoln Upper Grades and Transitional Kindergarten
• Madison Upper Grades and Kindergarten
• Tulita Upper Grades
• Washington Upper Grades and Kindergarten

Design planning is underway, with construction for initial projects expected in the 2026-27 school year.

02.

Athletic Field Improvements Moving Forward

At Redondo Union High School, the Sea Hawk Bowl field will be fully replaced with new synthetic turf, updated graphics, and refreshed game lines. The RUHS practice/soccer field will also receive new turf and reconfigured lines to support multiple athletic programs.

At Tulita Elementary, the district will seek an estimate to replace the excessively used natural grass field with synthetic turf to improve durability and year-round student access.

Key turf features include:

• PFAS removed from all turf since 2024
• Pivot turf with no rubber infill
• Independently tested to meet NFL, NCAA, and FIFA safety standards
• 12-year warranty and fully recyclable

These upgrades will provide safer, more reliable athletic and recreational spaces while reducing long-term maintenance needs.

03.

Redondo Union High School Innovation and Design CTE Building

Design is underway for a new Innovation and Design Career Technical Education Building at Redondo Union High School. The project will replace the former bingo building and create approximately 16,000 square feet of modern instructional space. These designs are still in the concept development phase and may change before being finalized. 

The new facility will support:

• STEM learning environments
• Aerospace and engineering programs
• Photography and digital media labs
• Expanded hands-on CTE opportunities

The project is currently in design and is expected to be submitted to the Division of the State Architect (DSA) by summer 2026, with construction anticipated to begin in summer 2027.

Sea Hawk Bowl Stadium Improvements

Safety and accessibility improvements are planned for the Sea Hawk Bowl at Redondo Union High School. Planned upgrades include:



• Concrete and seating repairs
• ADA accessibility improvements
• New and upgraded single-occupancy restroom facilities

General repairs are scheduled to begin in summer 2026, with restroom improvements continuing into the 2026 - 2027 school year.

New Early Learning Classrooms at Lincoln and Madison

Measure S is supporting expanded early learning facilities at two elementary schools.

Madison Elementary School

• Removal of four aging portable classrooms
• Construction of three new permanent Kindergarten classrooms with dedicated restrooms
• Expanded and reconfigured play spaces

Lincoln Elementary School

• Removal of five portable classrooms
• Construction of three new TK classrooms with restrooms
• Construction of two new classrooms supporting specialized programs
• Playground and play space improvements

Preliminary Planning at Jefferson Elementary

The district has begun preliminary planning conversations regarding replacement of aging portable classrooms at Jefferson Elementary School. With the goal in mind to offer full-day TK, Jefferson will look at new classroom options that will provide more classroom space for a full-day TK program by 2028-29.

Districtwide Technology and Safety Upgrades

Technology and infrastructure improvements continue across RBUSD schools, including:

• Upgraded network wiring and cabling
• Improved wireless access and network switches
• Enhanced campus safety, including main entrance security upgrades
• Pilot programs exploring electronic access control systems
• Upgraded campus communication systems including PA speakers, clocks, and bell systems
• Strengthened cybersecurity with improved threat monitoring

• Washington Elementary

These sites now have stronger network infrastructure, better wireless coverage, and upgraded safety and communication systems.

Work Now Underway

Our teams are currently completing upgrades at:

• Tulita Elementary
• Beryl Heights Elementary
• Alta Vista Elementary

Up Next

We’re excited to share that Redondo Union High School and Patricia Dreizler Continuation School are scheduled for its Measure S upgrades this summer. Students and staff can look forward to modernized network infrastructure, safety enhancements, and refreshed communication systems.

Summer Projects

• Gutter replacement/installation (all school sites)
• Roof restoration (new coating)
• HVAC installation in school libraries that do not currently have air conditioning
• RUHS Sea Hawk Bowl bleacher and concrete repair and replacement

Commitment to Transparency and Stewardship

RBUSD remains committed to ensuring Measure S funds are used responsibly and transparently. These projects reflect the community’s investment in safe, innovative, and future-ready learning environments for RBUSD students. 

By law, when a general obligation bond is passed by a community, a Citizens’ Oversight Committee is formed. Made up of seven community members, the purpose of the Committee is to inform the public concerning the expenditure of bond revenues. On a quarterly basis, the committee reviews the expenditures made by the school district and ensures that each expenditure is in compliance with the bond language that the community authorized. As well, an annual independent audit is conducted, with results posted on the school district website.
