Sweet Thursday

Sweet Thursday Author Series

In 1828, Miranda Evoy escaped famine-stricken Ireland with her husband and children for a better life in America. Within two years she was a widow raising five children in a new country. Bridget’s Gambit tells the true story of how a remarkable young woman managed to make her way to California and became an entrepreneur during the Gold Rush. Author Craig C. Harwood recounts the accomplishments and adventures of this determined woman and her daughters to build an empire in defiance of the social and gender constraints of the Victorian Era. This biography of an audacious, persistent woman brings to the forefront the largely unheralded contributions of women in forming of California statehood and restores a lost chapter in the history of the American West.

Join the Sweet Thursday Author Series on Thursday, March 26 at 7:00 pm in the DTCH at the Lafayette Library to hear author, Craig C. Harwood. Register to attend in person here. The doors will open at 6:30 for coffee and sweets and books will be available for purchase. This program is presented by Friends of the Lafayette Library.

The Contra Costa Nonprofit Board & Community Partnership Fair

Civic, cultural, and business leaders are invited to join in supporting the vital work of the local nonprofit community at the Contra Costa Nonprofit Board & Community Partnership Fair, a celebration of collaboration, civic leadership, and shared purpose.

Nonprofits across Contra Costa work tirelessly to strengthen our communities, yet many face a shared challenge—finding committed, diverse board members. This Fair connects nonprofits with people who want to make a difference, strengthening leadership and impact across the region.

Brought to you by Contra Costa Area Agency on Aging, Choice in Aging, Contra Costa Senior Legal Services, East Bay Leadership Council, East Contra Costa Community Alliance, Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano, Rachel Rosekind with the Library Foundation of Contra Costa, RCF Connects, and Rubicon Programs.

The Fair will:

  • Offer opportunities for professional networking, shared learning, and board-matching
  • Provide emerging and established nonprofits with resources related to fundraising, financials, and legal compliance
  • Address current threats and challenges to the nonprofit sector and provide strategies to meet them
  • Offer local vendors and organizations an opportunity to showcase their resources to support nonprofits

ANNOUNCEMENTS

FROM OUR NONPROFIT COMMUNITY

Northern California Sled Dog Rescue (NorSled)

Northern California Sled Dog Rescue (NorSled)

Meet Holden. The total package.

We’re calling this 5-year-old a Shepsky (Husky/Shepherd mix) but is probably more Shepherd than Husky. He is 55 lbs of handsome, loving perfection.

Holden was found wandering the streets of Richmond and never claimed at the shelter - but he quickly became a staff favorite. One meeting with him and you’ll understand why.

💙 Calm and affectionate

🎾 Loves fetch, tug, toys and even soccer

🚗 Great in the car

🐾 Walks nicely on leash

🧠 Smart boy who knows sit, paw, down, give, and come

Take him out in public and he shines. On a recent brewery outing he was amazing. Friendly with people, great with kids, playful with dogs, and perfectly happy to settle down and lean against his person.

At home he’s a total cuddle bug who wants nothing more than to be near you - and maybe sneak into your lap for kisses.

The only thing Holden is missing? A family. Apply on the Northern California Sled Dog Rescue (NorSled) website to meet him: www.norsled.org. 🏡💙🐾

Lamorinda Sunrise Rotary

Peace Through Art

Peace Through Art is a new community initiative bringing student voice into public spaces across Lamorinda. In partnership with local middle schools, students created hand-painted wooden pickets that express what peace means to them—through themes like kindness, empathy, listening, and understanding. The project is connected to the Good Character Awards and highlights the everyday behaviors that help strengthen our community.

The pickets will be displayed in rotating exhibits at schools and community locations throughout Lamorinda. If your business or organization would like to host a small installation and help share these student-created messages of peace, we’d love to hear from you. Please contact Lamorinda Sunrise Rotary to learn more about participating.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Flexible Volunteer Opportunities Now Open in Lamorinda

Looking for a way to give back locally without committing to weekly meetings?

A new project-based volunteer group in Lamorinda is organizing hands-on service opportunities that fit your schedule. Sponsored by Lamorinda Sunrise Rotary, the group is designed for people who want to make a difference in the community, without the structure of a traditional club.

Recent and upcoming projects include creek and park restoration at Las Trampas Creek and the adjoining park, community improvement efforts at local venues, and support for regional nonprofits like John Muir Land Trust.

Volunteers participate on a project-by-project basis, choosing activities that match their interests, availability, and energy. Whether you can help once or want to stay involved, there’s a place to contribute. This flexible approach is helping more residents get involved in meaningful local service on their own terms.
