Women’s Cancer Network Receives Generous Donation from Avera Health

The All Women Count! (AWC!) program’s Women’s Cancer Network (WCN) recently received a $15,000 donation from Avera Health to support access to breast and cervical cancer screenings.

Established in 1997, WCN helps women who do not qualify for AWC! but still face financial barriers to care. Because the AWC! program is federally funded, donated dollars are managed through WCN.

For more than 25 years, WCN has relied on support from community events, businesses, and individual donors. These funds help cover screening and diagnostic services for women across South Dakota.

From 2021 to 2025, WCN provided $69,644.80 in assistance toward medical bills, helping improve access to timely care.

For more information about WCN, please contact Sarah Quail.

New DOH Cancer Reports Published

The 2021 Annual Cancer Report has been published.

The report summarizes the burden of cancer in South Dakota by providing incidence and mortality rates to inform health systems and partners on cancer trends throughout the state.

The report is available on the South Dakota Cancer Registry website.

Over the past five years, the South Dakota Comprehensive Cancer Control Program, alongside the Cancer Coalition and partners statewide, has made progress in reducing the burden of cancer.

The Outcomes of the 2021–2025 South Dakota Cancer Plan highlights how collaboration across healthcare, public health, and community organizations has led to meaningful improvements in prevention, screening, and survivorship.

Key successes include reductions in youth tobacco use, expanded HPV vaccination outreach, increased access to cancer screenings, and the development of statewide data dashboards. Together, these efforts have expanded reach and improved access to care across South Dakota.

In 2018, Eivind Oland's prostate cancer journey began with a routine exam that showed an elevated PSA level. What followed was a diagnosis of an aggressive form of prostate cancer.

Over the past seven years, he has navigated treatment, side effects, and uncertainty with what he calls “SISU,” a Finnish concept rooted in grit, resilience, and determination.

Since his diagnosis, Eivind has undergone surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and ongoing hormone therapy. Through it all, he has remained focused on living fully and staying grounded in gratitude for his family, his care team, and the support of others who understand the experience.

Without a local support group early on, Eivind became his own advocate. He sought out information, connected with regional and national groups, and learned how to navigate life with prostate cancer.

That experience led him to help launch the South Dakota Prostate Cancer Coalition to ensure others have access to support closer to home.

Prostate cancer is also a priority area in the South Dakota Cancer Plan, with a focus on improving shared decision-making and helping men make informed choices about screening and care.

Today, the coalition is building a growing network across the state. Whether newly diagnosed, in treatment, or living beyond cancer, the message is simple - you are not alone.

Help Spread the Word: Caregiver & Survivorship Programs Available

The Cancer Coalition continues support for both caregivers and cancer survivors through two programs focused on connection, practical support, and quality of life.

In partnership with Active Generations, the Coalition has launched a free, statewide program for unpaid caregivers of people with cancer. Caregivers - spouses, family members, friends, and neighbors - are often navigating this role quietly and without support. This program offers monthly support groups and social gatherings, educational classes, one-on-one case management, and peer connections to help caregivers feel supported and understood.

Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at Active Generations Main in Sioux Falls, with a virtual Zoom option available.

The Coalition is also supporting Monument Health’s Cancer Transitions: Moving Beyond Treatment program, which focuses on life after cancer treatment. This four-week program meets once a week for 90-minute sessions and is led by a cancer survivor.

Participants engage in group discussion, short educational videos, and simple goal-setting activities to build confidence and support well-being as they adjust to life after treatment.

Coalition partners are encouraged to help spread the word about both opportunities. A simple recommendation can help caregivers and survivors connect with support at a time when it is often needed most.

For caregiver program information or to RSVP, contact Meghan Clark at Active Generations at 605-333-3312.

Rural Health Transformation Grant Opportunities

Now Open

The South Dakota Department of Health is pleased to announce the release of RFP #26-09RHT-011 Chronic Disease Management Programming as part of the SD Rural Health Transformation Initiative.

Selected applicants will address the leading causes of death and disability in South Dakota’s rural communities by implementing chronic disease evidence-based interventions and remote monitoring programs.

South Dakota clinics, hospitals, pharmacies, dental clinics, tribal health, and Indian Health Services (IHS) serving rural and frontier communities are encouraged to submit a proposal.

The South Dakota Department of Social Services has released an opportunity for providers to apply for Rural Strong Grants, intended to strengthen access to care in rural communities.

These are subrecipient provider grants funded through the Rural Health Transformation Project supported by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and are in support of the following initiatives described in the Rural Health Transformation Program project narrative.

  • Medicaid Rural Health Access and Quality Grants
  • Medicaid Primary Accountable Care Transformation
  • Regional Maternal and Infant Health Hubs

Please find more information about these grants and additional funding opportunities on our Coalition website.
