2023 Spotlight on Structured Literacy | |

Dr. Stevens will describe guidelines for vocabulary instruction, including how to choose which words to teach. She will describe the steps in a routine for teaching essential words, provide sample vocabulary maps for various content areas, and model instruction. Dr. Stevens will then provide suggestions for planning vocabulary instruction and share resources teachers can use in their classroom. The presentation will conclude with a Q&A period.

IDA Youth Workforce Program | |

The International Dyslexia Association is pleased to announce our new Youth Workforce Program. The initiative, developed by IDA in partnership with the Synchrony Foundation, helps to prepare students with dyslexia and other learning disabilities to successfully enter the workforce or higher education. This program, which is free to participants, will provide both workshops and hands-on, transition skills training and is geared towards youth between the ages of 14 –20. Apply by April 15.

English Learners & Dyslexia | |

Please share the NEW 2023 IDA FACT SHEET created with assistance from Elsa Cárdenas-Hagan, Ed.D. What are the issues surrounding early identification of dyslexia and other reading disabilities among English learners? Classroom teachers will find the information in this fact sheet helpful as they observe students for possible referral for further assessment. The fact sheet also includes guidelines for assessment specialists who may provide screening and assessment support.

Needed: Adults with a documented reading disorder. Participants get a chance to learn how the brain works during reading and will receive a personalized reading treatment plan. The research is being conducted at the Georgia State/Georgia Tech Center for Advanced Brain Imaging. The principal investigator is Dr. C. Nikki Arrington; the co-investigators are Dr. Robin Morris, Dr. Rachael Harrington, and Dr. Lisa C. Krishnamurthy.

Knowledge Acquisition Transformation Expansion (KATE) is a literacy supplement focusing on reading comprehension for 4th and 5th graders. WestEd is working with researchers at Texas A&M University to expand the use of their evidence-based reading comprehension program.
