Dear Spectrum Dance Theater Community,

We have so much to celebrate here at Spectrum Dance Theater!

We made the decision to move our Annual MOVEMENT Gala to the fall so that we can CELEBRATE BIG! This will allow us to fully commemorate two momentous occasions occurring later this year–the 40th Anniversary of Spectrum Dance Theater and the 20th Anniversary of Donald Byrd’s tenure as the Artistic Director.

However, this spring, since we are shifting our Gala festivities to the fall, we need your help now to finish the year STRONG!

We also have to celebrate you - our community! As this pandemic gets closer to ending it is not an understatement to say that Spectrum would not have made it through the pandemic without your support. At a time when there was so much uncertainty, you did not give up on us. Working through this pandemic has been challenging for all arts organizations but at Spectrum Dance Theater we have that “special sauce”–YOU our incredible supporters.

We have managed to move forward with resiliency and continue with strong programming across the entire organization all due to your generosity.

The School of Spectrum Dance Theater has returned to live, in person classes at nearly full capacity. Our teaching staff have flawlessly managed to teach both live and virtual classes providing top-notch instruction to our students. As the School prepares for their All School Demonstration and a full roster of summer programming, your donation will aid in the facilitation of an enriching summer experience for our Spectrum youth.

Our Community Engagement efforts will also continue into the spring with another FREE community dance day. This all-ages community class is a vibrant exchange with Spectrum Dance Theater artists and instructors. We hope to see all of you there as we exchange in movement rhythm, and community.

We believe in removing barriers and providing safe spaces for movers to express themselves creatively. This is why we continue to expand our Gift of Dance scholarship program so that no student will ever be turned away. The value of dance cannot be overstated; dance fosters creativity, critical thinking, brain development, self-expression, engagement in social/civic discourse, and numerous other benefits. Your gift directly ensures that each of our students has the opportunity to continue their dance education.

Our Company, under the leadership of Artistic Director Donald Byrd, had a remarkable fall season with two live productions and a spring tour! And we are just getting started! The spring season will kick off premiering two new works within the INSIDIOUS theme, Love Is and Grief as Mr. Byrd and the company explore the lasting legacy of the Jim Crow Era and its current impact on American culture. Your gift directly sustains our artists’ jobs, invests in the future of the performing arts in Seattle, and champions critical conversations and social movements through dance.

Spectrum Dance Theater continues to operate with a lean team using our resources to create and deliver on the mission you support. We did not abandon our mission during this pandemic and we are proud to say that we are coming out of it stronger and more passionate than ever. The last two years have highlighted so many of the injustices that our communities face and we are ready to continue moving the conversation forward through dance. We have a renewed energy and hope you will join us as we embark on this new chapter.

Thank you in advance for your continued partnership.

In gratitude,

Tera Beach, Executive Director
