A Message from Your
AMTA-KY Chapter President
|
What a great turnout for our 2018 AMTA-KY Spring Conference March 9
th
thru 12
th
. If you were one of the Attendees, I hope you had a great experience. There was a great line-up of Educators that gave us more tools to add to our tool-belt. This year's conference brought attendees in from 5 States! We even had a group travel 2 Hours from Ohio just to attend our Vendor Hall. What a spectacular statement to make about our Vendors!
It is always so much fun to see everyone year after year, as well as meeting the First Timers. If you didn't get to join us, and you usually do, we did notice. If you have never been to one of our State Education Events, we hope to see you soon. We try very hard to accommodate schedules. Hopefully, it will work out for everyone, it is tentatively set for March 15
th - 17th
2019. At the request of our members, we will be returning to the Embassy Suites in Lexington. Please join us for stellar Education, Networking and a lot of laughs.
On March 10, 2018, I took the oath of office to be your next AMTA-KY Chapter President. For the next two years, my focus will be on Volunteer Recruitment. By the recommendations of the previous AMTA-KY Board, as stated in Val Smothers presentation at the Spring Business meeting, your new Board is committed to focus on Volunteerism to ensure a strong future for your AMTA-KY Chapter. In doing this, we have voted to not having a Summer or Fall education meeting for 2018. Our Volunteer base is thinning out. We have some Volunteers that have been here for our members for going on 10+ years. It is time to let them bow out gracefully and have others take on their Roles.
AMTA is turning 75 this year. Can you imagine how many Volunteers it has taken to get today...75 years later? Just on a state level, I personally know of at least 50 members who I have worked with in the past 11 years. I need you, the Board needs you, the Members need you and AMTA-KY Chapter needs you. A quote by Elizabeth Andrew..."Volunteers do not necessarily have the time: they just have the heart". It is so true. I don't have time for Volunteering...I have the Heart. That Heart drives my passion for the AMTA-KY Chapter. That passion gives me the desire to give of my time. If you have that Heart for YOUR Chapter, please contact me. I would love see where we can focus your Heart in serving your AMTA-KY Chapter.
Please remember...
AMTA-KY needs you
, and
YOU need AMTA-KY
.
"Volunteers do not necessarily have the time: they just have the heart".
Your AMTA-KY President,
Caren McCarty

2018 KY Chapter Meritorious Award
|
|
|
|
|
This Year's recipient for the
2018 KY Chapter Meritorious Award
has been given to Valerie Smothers. Valerie is Optimistic, Positive, Witty and Inspiring. She has an energy that easily motivates others and has served our AMTA-KY Chapter in countless ways with volunteering wherever needed.
Beginning in 2014, she was elected as our Chapter Secretary, 1st VP and President...but her volunteerism and dedication extend far beyond the duties of those titles, as has served our Chapter as Conference Coordinator and Registrar many times over.
During her presidency in 2016 - 2017, AMTA-KY Volunteering was at an all time low. Valerie had to add to her President duties the responsibilities of Secretary and Treasurer (Financial Administrator) until these positions were filled. We also lost our 2nd Board Member during this time, so the shifting of current board members was a necessity to try to get a complete Board. This entire process took months. She did an excellent job of keeping the entire Board together during this trying time in a cool, calm fashion mixed with some wit. Her comedic timing was impeccable with keeping the Board up lifted and enthusiastic.
Although Valerie has passed the torch on to the next generation of Board Members, she continues to be someone who still can be counted on with her gracious support. Providing this help will ensure that the Kentucky Chapter can continue to grow.
Valerie will receive her Chapter Meritorious Award at this year's National Convention in Washington, DC. Congratulations Val. Thank you so much for your Volunteerism.

"Once Upon a Time at my first AMTA conference in 2009, I came under scholarship as a student. Ms Denise Logsdon told me to do whatever Julie Harper said and the rest is history. I had never felt such
fulfillment
, excitement, and having
comradely
with this many people at once. I found another home another family that day. All I wanted to do was help it grow and to be apart of it. You cant help if you don't try. - Kayla Carby

JoAnn Klein |
|
JoAnn graduated
from SHI Integrated School of medical massage in 2000 and has been an AMTA for over 15 years. She became interested in massage
therapy when
ever
she worked at a television broadcast center and would work on former co-worker shoulder
s and they would compliment her and encourage her to look into massage therapy. JoAnn has been interested in Delegate for the last 8 years, her first National Convention was in Ohio. She absolutely loved the energy, community, and the diversity at the conference.
Her volunteer work with AMTA was when she decided she wanted to make a commitment to benefit massage therapy. She is now at a point in her life that she can commit the time to donate to the organization she loves.
"Massage therapy has changed my life I want to see it continued as legitimate medical practitioners."
She recommends that you come forward to volunteer. Be open to what needs to be done. Courage to say I need help for what I have volunteered for there is always someone willing to help.
"Every little bit helps, never think you can't do something that can benefit your organization. When you speak and do from the heart everything falls into place."

Volunteering:
Hard Work is Often Done "Behind the Scenes"
|
Collette Wilson
The
AMTA-KY Chapter, would like to say thank you for the hours upon hours of
dedication you have given to the massage therapy profession. You have paved the way, bringing the word Volunteer to a New Level. 2018 Spring Conference was
AMAZING because of your hard work behind the scenes as Conference Coordinator.
Collette has been Volunteering for AMTA on a Chapter and National Level since 2009. She has served as Benevolence Chair, Conference Coordinator, Registrar, 1st VP, 3rd VP, President and IPP for our AMTA-KY Chapter. On a National Level, she has served on the GROC and Awards Committees. She has served with the Massage Therapy Foundation in Marketing and Fundraising with the Development Committee, Outreach Committe, formally know as Chapter Outreach and The Underground Foundation. In 2017, She was an AMTA Corporate Sponsor Runner for the Boston Marathon on behalf of MTF.
Although, Collette is retiring on a KY Chapter Level, I am confident we will continue to see her around helping out when she can.
Thank you so much Collette for your dedication.
"I am a stronger, more confident individual, leader and professional because of my experience with AMTA." Member since 2007
