President's Message

Catherine Sturtz

March is a time often filled with reflection on luck, fortune, and the possibilities that lie ahead. I want to take a moment to share some thoughts on how we can all help prepare our students for a successful future, particularly when it comes to personal finance and the opportunities that await them.

Much like the legend of the leprechaun's pot of gold, the key to financial success is often within our grasp, but it requires focus, planning, and, yes—being in the right place at the right time. As we face the challenges that come with guiding and nurturing the next generation of students, it's important to emphasize the value of financial literacy and the incredible potential that lies in understanding and managing one's personal finances.

The future is not left to chance—it’s shaped by the actions we take today. Just as the four-leaf clover is a rare find, opportunities in personal finance may seem elusive at times. But with the right guidance and tools, we can all unearth those opportunities and put them to work for us. Whether it’s saving for the future, investing wisely, or career exploration, the key to financial well-being is empowering ourselves with real-world knowledge and skills.

March reminds us that while luck plays a role, it is our preparation of strong lessons in the classroom which provides students with opportunities to gain knowledge and develop skills which ultimately pave the way for their success. Let’s make it a goal to create our own luck—through educating our administrators and community on the impact we make in students' lives. Our expertise in teaching financial literacy and other business related topics is how students will master the concepts and be able to make smart decisions and have a proactive approach to managing their future as well as finances. The quote "You don’t learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over." is attributed to Richard Branson, the founder of the Virgin Group. It reflects his belief in the importance of trial and error, as well as learning through experience rather than just following prescribed rules which is what makes business education unique, fun and inspiring.

Together, let’s ensure that we are prepared not just for the educational challenges of today, and changes of tomorrow but for the bright future that lies ahead. I’m confident that as an organization we have the right tools for each of our members to find their own "pot of gold" in the opportunities we provide.

SPRING 2025 CONFERENCE RECAP

by Sallykaye Kaufman

LIBTA’s Spring Conference began with a presentation from Beth Bucheister of Career Day, Inc. Beth filled us in on how to implement a Career Day Program in our schools, either a full day, partial day, or by department. Beth brings in speakers from various industries, from engineers to accountants, restaurant owners and welders, or any other profession you can think of! These adults spend time speaking with students, showing them what a day in the life of a __________ consists of, and what the requirements are to working in that profession. Our kids here at Roslyn loved it! A few weeks prior to the date, students select the speakers they would like to interact with, and they are assigned rooms to visit throughout the day. Career Day staff also select one student for a scholarship, based on a submitted essay after the day is completed.
