Equity 220 spring update
At the May 17 Barrington 220 Board of Education meeting, Nate Rouse, the district's Director of Equity, Race, & Cultural Diversity Initiatives, as well as members of the District Equity Team, gave an update on the equity work that is being done in Barrington 220. Throughout this school year, district administrators participated in several professional development sessions to develop a deeper understanding of equity, race and cultural diversity. Rouse also discussed the Illinois State Board of Education's Equity Journey Continuum (EJC). EJC is an informational tool for districts to track their progress toward closing gaps in student achievement, opportunities, and supports. During his Superintendent's Report at the May 17 Board meeting, Dr. Hunt invited the community to the upcoming Framework 220 Coffee & Conversation events happening during the month of May. As Barrington 220 moves forward in its strategic planning process “Framework 220”, the district is seeking more community feedback to develop its mission, vision, strategic priorities and learner profile. Lessons D220 staff learned from pandemic
At the May 17 Board meeting, district leaders gave a presentation to the Board about the lessons Barrington 220 staff members learned from the global pandemic. District leaders collected feedback from staff at all Barrington 220 schools. Primary themes included: Technology, Flexibility & Adaptability, Relationships, Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Home/School Connections. Click here to read the entire presentation. Board approves new Asst. Superintendent for Student Services & Support
At the May 17 Board meeting, the Board approved Dr. Margaret “Peg” Lasiewicki as the district's new Assistant Superintendent for Student Services & Support. Dr. Lasiewicki comes to Barrington 220 from Arlington Heights School District 25 where she has served as the Assistant Superintendent for Student Services for the past three years. She previously worked at Skokie School District 68 as the Executive Director of Special Services. Dr. Lasiewicki earned her bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education from Northern Illinois University. She also holds a master's degree in Human Development and Learning & Administration from Depaul University, as well as a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Aurora University. She will begin in her new role on July 1.
Board approves 2022-23 K-8 school lunch prices
At the May 17 Board meeting, the Board approved lunch prices for students in grades K-8 for the 2022-23 school year. The lunch price will increase by 10 cents from $2.95 to $3.05. The breakfast price will also increase by 10 cents from $1.40 to $1.50. Due to free meal programs in place during the pandemic, the district has not raised lunch prices since the 2019-2020 school year.
ELC student wins Infinitec Award
At the May 17 Board meeting, the Board recognized Barrington Early Learning Center student Jacob Di Sanza, who received the Infinitec Technology Award. This honor is awarded to students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in overcoming challenges and accomplishing personal goals using assistive technology. BHS student earns perfect ACT score
At the May 17 Board meeting, the Board recognized BHS senior Sophia Cai for earning a perfect score of 36 on the ACT. She is among less than 1% of students nationwide who took the ACT and earned a perfect score. In addition to this academic achievement, Sophia has been awarded the President's Volunteer Service Award, she is a 2022 National Merit Semifinalist, AP Scholar, and ILMEA All-State Band Member. During her time at BHS she has been involved in many activities including: band, orchestra, math team, robotics, and science olympiad. After graduation Sophia plans to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where she will study computer science and molecular biology. Click here to view the recognition at the Board meeting.
BHS student named Ms. Basketball of Illinois
At the May 17 Board meeting, the Board recognized BHS junior Sophie Swanson, who has been named Ms. Basketball of Illinois by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association and the Chicago Tribune. Sophie, a Purdue University recruit, helped lead the BHS Girls Basketball Team to their first state trophy in program history when they finished as the IHSA Class 4A runner-up. She is one of 32 student-athletes nationwide who were recently selected to try out for the USA Women's Junior National Team. Click here to view the recognition at the Board meeting.
Dr. Hunt announces winners of Superintendent and BHS Principal Art Awards
At the May 17 Board meeting, the Board recognized BHS art students Madison Edwards (pictured left) and Aliya Salley (pictured right). Madison received this year's Superintendent Art Award from Dr. Hunt for this piece made with acrylic paint and colored pencil. It will be on display at the District Administrative Center for the next year. Aliya received this year's Principal Art Award from BHS Principal Steve McWilliams for this black and white photograph, which will be on display in the BHS front office for the next year. Sunny Hill student selected "Star-Spangled Student"
At the May 17 Board meeting, Sunny Hill Elementary student Ani Aguilera Aguirre led meeting attendees in reciting the pledge of allegiance. This is part of an initiative at Board meetings called the "Star-Spangled Student" which recognizes exemplary students. Ani is a 5th grader at Sunny Hill. Staff members say she is an exemplary student who is kind, compassionate and lives each day with empathy and grace. She is also bilingual and proud of her heritage. Congrats Ani!
