WINE is "WIN" with an "E": This Week's Staff Selections
Dave's Pick:
Olivier Laflaive Bourgogne 'Les Setilles' (2015)
I sympathize with the 'Anything But Chardonnay' crowd. After all, many oaked examples are overwrought and many unoaked versions lack interest. However, it's worth pointing out, Chardonnay is incredibly versatile and, under the right conditions, can thrive whether sparkling, still, oaked or stainless. Olivier 'Flavor' Leflaive's Bourgogne 'Les Setilles' is a perfect example of the combination of cool climate, calcium rich soil, and the judicious use of oak. The wine is bright and focused with hints of spice and never overly weighty. This is simply a beautiful intro to a wine style that may become an obsession. - $25.99
Darrin's Pick:
Marietta "Arme" Cabernet Sauvignon 2014, North Coast
Anyone who's ever asked my opinion, and some who didn't, have heard me lament the lack great values in California Cabernet. That's why this bottle stands out so boldly in that section. The humble "North Coast" AVA on the label is somewhat misleading as all the grapes (Cab, Malbec, Merlot & Petit Verdot) that go into this wine come from Marietta's Estate Vineyards in Alexander Valley, Yorkville Highlands and McDowell Ranch. This is dark and serious, almost brooding, until it opens up after some breathing. Then it reveals a diverse palate of dark berries, herbs, tobacco, anise and kirsch liqueur and becomes increasingly velvetty with air. This punches WAY above its weight class! Less than a case remains for this vintage -$26.99
Katrina's Pick:
Andrew Rich, Cabernet Franc, Columbia Valley (2015)
Cabernet Franc is traditionally famous for its supporting roles in Bordeaux and its one-man-production in the Loire, "Chinon." This grape is stealing the show in many "new world" wine growing regions, such as Oregon, where Andrew Rich  has created a beautifully balanced drinking experience of soft, dark red fruits balanced with earth, oak, violets and pepper. I give this wine 2 Thumbs Up in the role of "Taste Bud Tantalizer." -$21.99
Patti's Pick:
Chateau La Couronne, Saint-Emilion, Grand Cru (2014)
Lay it down or drink it, this wine is versatile. The chateau dates back to the 18th century, but came under new ownership in 1994 giving it more modern roots. Stylistically Chateau La Couronne remains a classic and true to it's past while embracing it's future. Saint-Emilion is well known in Bordeaux for it's elegant merlot dominant wines. This wine stays true to form; sexy and sleek with rich red fruits, vanilla, subtle tannin and a long finish. Say hello to your new date night wine.
