Open House and Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) Tours
Saturday April 20
9 am - 2 pm
20000 W. Eight Mile Road, Southfield
In celebration of Earth Day, join us at our open house for tours of the Recycling Authority's state-of-the-art and highly automated Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). See first hand how the recyclables you put into your bin/cart are sorted, separated and converted into valuable resources that will be sold and reused to make new products.

Things to know about touring the MRF:
  • Visitors will be taken inside our processing facility, up a flight of stairs and alongside employees and equipment. Therefore, visitors must be able to walk up and down a flight of stairs.
  • Long pants and sturdy, closed-toed, closed-heel shoes are required.
  • The following personal protective equipment is provided and required to be worn while inside our facility: safety vest, hard hat and safety glasses.
  • All visitors will be required to complete and sign a "Site Access Agreement, Waiver of Liability and Release" form.
  • The MRF is considered an industrial/manufacturing facility and may not be appropriate for people with medical conditions impacted by dust, noise or airborne allergens. Additionally, the MRF has magnets that may impact medical devices.

No appointment necessary! The MRF will be open to the public
from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm on Saturday April 20th.

*If you are bringing items for the HHW event, drop those off using the truck entrance at 20875 Mapleridge, then drive around to the building entrance on Eight Mile Road to tour the facility.
Wondering How the MRF Works?
Watch our new MRF video to see how the Recycling Authority’s efficient, state-of-the-art and highly automated Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) operates to sort and separate the recyclables you put in your bin or cart.
Your Recyclables ARE Recycled!
When it comes to recycling, everyone has a part to play and quality matters!

The recyclables from RRRASOC member communities, regardless of the hauler that collects them, are delivered to the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Southfield, where they are sorted, separated, baled and shipped to brokers and manufacturers to be made back into new products.

For manufacturers to want and use recyclables, the material must meet certain quality standards. Unacceptable items—such as garden hoses, plastic bags, diapers, needles, propane tanks, as well as yard and food waste — lower productivity at the MRF, reduce the end-market value of recyclables and most importantly, expose our employees to unsafe material. In other words, poor quality jeopardizes the usability of recyclables.

Be sure to RECYCLE RIGHT!
  1. Know what to recycle – clean paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and containers, glass food and beverage bottles and jars, metal food and beverage cans, foil, trays, etc. Check our Recycling Guidelines at rrrasoc.org
  2. Keep containers EMPTY, CLEAN & DRY and free of food and liquids.
  3. Keep it LOOSE. Do not bag or bundle recyclables.
