April 2023 Newsletter
Greetings,

One morning earlier this week I took a few minutes to sit in one of our rocking chairs overlooking Sims Park and enjoy a cup of coffee. What a terrific spot from which to watch this community waking up. Groups of walkers passing by, some pushing baby strollers, some walking their dogs - there were even a few joggers. I suspect little has changed in the 95+ years that guests have sat on this back porch, sipped coffee and eased into the day. I always find the timeless continuity of basic activities to be one of the interesting things surrounding historic hotels. It felt good to imagine that this park, the hotel and this downtown are once again being enjoyed as they were generations ago.

Thank you for your interest in The Hacienda. I hope you will have the opportunity to visit us often and experience what guests have enjoyed for nearly 100 years - this special hotel and unique community.

Cheers!

White Heron Tea & Gifts:
An Interview With the Owner
New Port Richey has so much to offer and so much of it is right within walking distance of The Hacienda. Come for the weekend, park once and enjoy the rest of your time on foot. There are so many incredible businesses downtown- many of which were recently voted "Best of the Best" by the Tampa Bay Times. Here are a few places we recommend visiting.

The White Heron Tea & Gifts for a gorgeous array of gifts and handcrafted tea. The White Heron features a Hacienda Hotel tea blend, featuring subtle notes of hibiscus. The tea also is a familiar shade of pink when brewed.

If you're in the mood for a true "high tea" experience, The White Heron offers traditional English tea service throughout the week, complete with scones, finger sandwiches and your own pot of tea. Reservations are required for the "Best of the Best" Tea Room in Tampa Bay.

The First Settlers of New Port Richey

In December 1883, Aaron McLaughlin Richey (1837-1912), with his wife and daughter, came from Missouri and settled near the mouth of the Cotee (an abbreviation of the Indian name Pithlachascotee) River. His homestead's location became familiarly known as Richey Point.

Shortly after, he established a post office and called it Port Richey. He was its first postmaster, and also opened a small store at that location. Because of his travels by boat along the river and coast to deliver mail and packages - and ferry passengers when needed - he was soon known as Captain Richey.

The actual beginning of New Port Richey dates from 1911, when W. E. Guilford drew up a plan for a future city further inland on the Cotee River. He surveyed locations for many of the proposed city's streets and avenues, and his plan has been followed with very little deviation since that date.
