First Habitat Homeowner Makes Final Mortgage Payment!

Tammy Wood, the first Nevada County Habitat Homeowner, moved into her Penn Valley home on March 1, 1998. â€śI heard about the Habitat program from my dad and step-mom. They had moved to Florida, but read The Union online. They saw an article on Habitat and encouraged me to attend an orientation.”

“There were two orientation meetings. One was on opening day for my son’s Little League, so that was out. But I made it to the second one. I brought along my eight year old daughter. After the meeting I knew I would be eligible, so I applied, not thinking I’d be accepted.”

Tammy says the move from a two-bedroom apartment into her home was a milestone. â€śWe finally had some stability,” says Tammy. â€śThe fear of eviction went away. I knew my kids and I would have a home.”

While acknowledging that there were some stressful times, Tammy says that having predictable housing costs was helpful. “I always prioritized my mortgage payment.”

According to Tammy, becoming a Habitat homeowner has boosted her confidence. And, she has become a Habitat advocate, encouraging and supporting others to apply.

Congratulations, Tammy!

Meet the New Habitat Associate Director

Tai Batov has joined the Habitat team as Associate Director! Tai has over a decade of experience in non-profits and a deep commitment to community driven social impact. In her new role, Tai will focus on expanding fundraising initiatives and strengthening the Habitat leadership capacity to further Habitat’s mission.

Tai was attracted to her new position by the opportunity to work for the Habitat organization, the fact that the job lined up with her career goals, and the focus on serving her local community.

When not at work, Tai loves spending time with her family (which includes two rescued dogs) and being in nature. Tai’s extended family is spread out all over the world, so she enjoys travelling to see them and learning about different languages and cultures. Tai says, “This travel always increases my appreciation of our beautiful country that we call home.”

Money Matters

Another reason to pay your water and sewer bill on time: if you live in Grass Valley, the city can attach your unpaid water and sewer balance to your property tax. This complicates your impound account and can cause undue stress.
