Allergies from an Eastern Medicine Perspective

Dr. Rekha Lund

Over 25% of Americans suffer with seasonal allergies. Recent available data shows in just one year, over 4 MILLION people visited their primary doctor with a chief complaint of “allergies”. Most of these patients will be prescribed a pharmaceutical drug to relieve their symptoms of runny nose, itchy and watering eyes, and sneezing. The drugs do work and provide welcomed relief. However, I invite you to consider a different perspective on allergies. Why do they happen in the first place? Why are more Americans suffering with allergies in 2025 compared to the year 2000? What has changed? Is it our environment, or is it us?

One of the many beautiful gifts of Eastern medicine is the ability to find strengths and weaknesses in our body. When we are very young, much of our health is determined by what we inherit. Thereafter, how our health unfolds and what ailments we suffer with are largely because of our lifestyle. Eastern medicine marries these two factors, namely one’s health tendencies based on genetics AND what problems are arising because of lifestyle choices. Eastern medicine doctors can then determine what treatment is best for that particular individual. We all have strengths and weaknesses. An Eastern medicine doctor can help find imbalances in your body to help you find the root cause of your problem. In this manner, you can heal from the inside out. Problems such as allergies can actually go AWAY. This may be hard to believe if you are someone that depends on allergy medication year after year and have that “here we go again” feeling every time you sneeze when spring flowers start to bloom!

In our modern medical system, we have many drugs to help with SYMPTOMS of allergies. In the Eastern medical system, we consider factors such as the immune system barrier and the overall terrain in which the allergens interact. The immune system barrier is made up of the mucosal lining of the lungs, nose, throat and intestines. The speed and quality in which the immune system can respond is also part of our defense. If the mucosal lining is too dry or underdeveloped and weak, it may become permeable to allergens such as pollen, dander, dust, etc. and these particles can then readily cross the weak immune system “barrier.” Our immune system then recognizes these particles as foreign and triggers the release of histamine which causes allergy symptoms. The problem with pharmaceutical allergy medication is, though they help symptoms, they do absolutely nothing to improve the immune system barrier. Herein lies the problem. Most patients with allergies typically get worse over time for this reason. Taking pharmaceutical drugs does not change the terrain or the immune system barrier. This explains why many people that suffer with allergies ultimately end up taking higher doses or multiple medications over time. Basically, they need more drugs to relieve their symptoms over time. Other people start off with allergies only in the spring, and as time goes on, they may develop allergies all year long.

There is a bright light however. Eastern herbal medicine can help individuals improve the immune system barrier thereby alleviating the root cause of the problem. Symptoms can improve quickly AND improve over time, allowing for less and less treatment. Keep in mind the goal is to change the terrain and the body’s ability to “shut the door” to allergens. The immune system is absolutely capable of doing this and I have seen many patients CURE their allergy symptoms. Moreover, the person becomes healthier and healthier over time and many other problems such as low energy, difficulty sleeping, and anxiety improve because Eastern medicine takes a whole-body approach to health rather than masking symptoms. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions about your individual health concerns. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Dr. Rekha Lund
