Spring into Success with The Spartan Experience Record!

Spring is in full bloom, and as we move past the halfway point of the semester, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the experiences and achievements you’ve built this year. Whether you are preparing to apply for jobs, internships, graduate programs, or scholarships, showcasing your involvement can help you stand out.

Your Spartan Experience Record (SER) provides a powerful way to highlight the activities, leadership roles, and transferable skills you have developed beyond the classroom. Just like spring brings new growth and opportunity, your SER allows you to demonstrate how your experiences have helped you grow throughout your time at Michigan State.

In addition to sharing your SER with potential employers, graduate programs, or scholarship committees, it can also serve as a valuable, reflection tool. By reviewing your SER, you may begin to notice patterns in your interests, identify areas where you would like to grow, and find the language to articulate what you gained from each experience.

Ready to request? You can request your SER through the Registrar’s Office alongside your transcript to begin using it right away!

Activity Spotlight: Student Organic Farm

Looking for a hands-on way to get involved? The Student Organic Farm brings together students from a wide range of majors to grow organic fruits, vegetables, flowers, and herbs — all while learning about sustainable food systems and community engagement.

Students gain valuable real-world experience that connects classroom learning with practical skills in agriculture, teamwork, and sustainability. Many crew positions are filled by dedicated volunteers, making volunteering a great way to get started and grow your involvement at the farm.

Experiences like these can also be showcased in your Spartan Experience Record, helping you highlight the skills you develop beyond the classroom.

A great place to start is by exploring our website!

Log into the Spartan Experience Record platform and take a look around.

Check out the Opportunities Catalog tab to find experiences at MSU that may be of interest to you. Under the “Spartan Experience Record” tab, you may see experiences you have participated in that are either pending verification or are verified.

Experience: An approved student role within a specific program, organization, or place of employment, which is officially added to the Spartan Experience Record.

Experiences must be...

1) MSU-sponsored

2) Not bear academic credit

3) Meet the definition of a co-curricular experience

Organizations with listed experiences must be MSU-sponsored, with defined and articulated learning outcomes and assessments that align with MSU’s Undergraduate Learning Goals.

Students learn a lot at MSU beyond coursework alone — and now, you can prove it. The Spartan Experience Record provides an opportunity for students to collect, document, and verify all of the experiences that shape education.

Don’t see your out-of-classroom experience in the SER Platform or Opportunities Catalog? No problem! Suggest your experience and start the process to get it added to your record.
