Cuesta College as a Talent Engine

Across the Central Coast, employers are facing significant workforce shortages, particularly in healthcare and high-demand technical fields. Cuesta College is responding with a deliberate, data-informed approach that strengthens regional capacity while expanding opportunity for students.
In healthcare, the region currently faces a shortage of approximately 953 registered nurses, with projections indicating a need for more than 3,500 additional nurses in the coming years. Cuesta College's Nursing and Allied Health programs are addressing this challenge through expanded instructional capacity, accelerated pathways, and close collaboration with regional healthcare partners.
Cuesta College is also contributing to workforce development in aviation maintenance, an industry that plays a critical role in the regional economy. The Aviation Maintenance Technology program continues to grow, supported by strong employer demand and the successful completion of a second student cohort.
Together, these efforts demonstrate Cuesta College’s role in preparing students for meaningful careers while supporting the long-term economic vitality of the Central Coast.

Student Moises Cisneros is putting his passion for service into action through the Cuesta College Corps program. As a fellow placed with City Farm SLO, one of the program’s newest community partners, Moises supports local food production while building leadership, teamwork, and professional skills.
Drawing on hands-on experience gained working alongside his family, Moises has become an integral part of City Farm’s efforts to grow and distribute food for the community. His dedication and impact were recently recognized in City Farm SLO’s 2025 annual report, highlighting the meaningful role Cuesta College students play beyond the classroom.

The Cuesta College Corps program provides debt-free pathways to higher education while offering fellows meaningful opportunities to serve their community. Through partnerships with local nonprofit organizations, students gain hands-on experience, develop professional skills, and contribute to work that addresses real community needs.
Cuesta College Corps continues to expand its partnerships, making this year our largest group of collaborators to date. Last year, we partnered with 15 Community Host Organizations and have now grown to 20, with additional organizations in SLO County expressing interest in joining us.
| | Children's Center Earns Highest Tier of Accreditation | | |
The Cuesta College Children’s Center has earned NAEYC Accreditation+, the highest level of national accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
This recognition reflects the center’s commitment to high-quality early learning and its critical role in supporting student parents. By providing accessible, high-quality childcare at the San Luis Obispo and North County campuses, the Children’s Center helps students remain enrolled and continue progressing toward their educational and career goals.
The center also serves as a laboratory school for Cuesta’s Child Development and Family Studies programs, preparing future early childhood educators through hands-on learning and professional practice.
| | Cougar Compass: A Coordinated, Proactive Approach to Student Success | | |
Cuesta College continues to strengthen Cougar Compass, our integrated case management framework designed to ensure students receive timely, coordinated support from entry through completion. Grounded in Guided Pathways and informed by data, Cougar Compass aligns academic, enrollment, and student support services to focus resources where they have the greatest impact on persistence and completion.
A key component of this work is STAR Signal, a proactive referral system that allows faculty and staff to quickly connect students to personalized support—and to recognize achievement. Since its launch, STAR Signal has generated more than 1,300 referrals to financial aid, counseling, tutoring, and basic needs resources, while also celebrating student success through more than 200 academic applauses.
Together, Cougar Compass and STAR Signal reflect Cuesta College’s commitment to early intervention, equity-minded support, and student-centered systems that help learners stay on track and complete their educational goals.
