Spring News Bulletin 2019

 Xenia zu Hohenlohe Introduction
It is now official! Our new ‘baby’, the Considerate app - the latest addition to our set of sustainability solutions - has a name and look. We are delighted to be introducing ‘ fluttr ’ to you! Small acts create one movement of change. See below for more details and do contact us if you want to be part of the exciting testing phase!

Having just returned from the WTTC’s (World Travel and Tourism Council’s) annual summit, where Barack Obama was welcomed as the key-note speaker, we were heartened to find sustainable travel and hospitality at the top of the agenda, along with climate change

About 40% of all panel sessions covered either one or both of these topics; a huge increase from only five years ago when it was probably no more than 5%. Back then, the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards were also held as a separate event, rather than being an integral part of the conference as they now are (for the winners of this year’s Awards please see the section below)

Small Actions. One Movement.
We, at the Considerate Group, are proud to announce the name & look of our new mobile app, designed specifically to streamline energy management for SME hospitality businesses.

The development of this app is part of the UK Government’s Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy’s (BEIS)  £8.8 million innovation competition  to develop exciting, new and innovative solutions to assist hospitality, retail businesses and schools to monitor and reduce their energy usage.

3SIXTY Sustainable Linens
We are delighted to introduce our newest Considerate supplier – 3SIXTY Sustainable Linens Ltd.

By using 3SIXTY  products, h otels can have an impact in the fight against single use plastics without having to make complicated changes to their current linen operations.

Their mission is to create the most environmentally friendly, sustainable and socially responsible textile products for the hospitality industry.

Their Ecomax range is made by recycling used plastic bottles and mixing them with high grade cotton to create a range of hospitality textiles that dramatically reduces the impact of these bottles upon the planet.

Energy costs increasing for businesses
From the 1st April 2019, the Climate Change Levy (CCL) businesses pay on their electricity and gas use increased by  45% and 67%  respectively, as shown in the table. This increase is intended to recoup lost revenue from the  early closure  of the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency scheme (CRC).

To replace the reporting side of the CRC scheme, the Government introduced the new Streamlined Carbon and Energy Reporting (SECR) , which also came in to effect at the start of the month.

Clean supports Shelter
Leading linen laundry supplier CLEAN has donated over 2,000 pieces of hotel linen to partners of housing and homelessness charity Shelter.

Over 2,000 items of high-quality, surplus microstripe single, double and king duvet covers were hand delivered to Shelter by members of the Clean transport team based at the company’s world-class super laundry at Slough Trading Estate. Shelter then distributed the items to its partners in the wider community.
T4T Award Winners Announced
At the recent WTTC Global Summit in Seville, the winners of the Tourism for Tomorrow awards were unveiled. As supporters of the awards, Considerate were delighted to be in attendance as all finalists in these prestigious awards in sustainable tourism were recognised, and the winners announced. This year the categories were as follows: Social Impact, Destination Stewardship, Climate Action, Investing in People, and the new Changemakers award.

Save Henry!
Considerate suppliers Janitorial Express sell a huge number of vacuums, some of which come back to them for repair. But there are an excessive number which are likely to be thrown into landfill OR get stuck in huge vacuum graveyards (otherwise known as storage rooms).

According to reports in  The Telegraph , each year Britons are estimated to throw away around two million tonnes of electronic waste. To change this we need to fix what's broken rather than replacing it, but repair shops are becoming increasingly scarce on our high streets. So Janitorial Express decided to try something different!

Considerate in the media!
We have been busy recently! Check out our ideas for making sustainability sexy in our #50shadesofgreen video with the Financial Times.
We were also thrilled to be featured in the current sustainability issue of Country & Town House and the Spring edition of I-M - both of which are available to buy now!

Battlesteads reduce emissions for SEVEN consecutive years!
Battlesteads, a 3 star hotel in Northumberland, has managed to reduce emissions per room night for an impressive seven years in a row.

What is remarkable about this achievement is not only the gradual improvement, but also the staggering overall decrease from seven years ago – emissions per room night today are roughly a fifth of where they were in 2012 – a decrease of almost 80%.

How did  Battlesteads  achieve this reduction? The most significant impact has been achieved by procuring green energy, and by generating both solar and biomass energy onsite.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are 17 global goals developed for the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development . Embracing a wide range of environmental, social and economic issues, these 17 goals with their 169 associated targets aim to connect business strategies to global priorities for people and the planet.
