The mission of the Habersham Humane Society, Inc., is to advance and promote humane treatment and care of Habersham County's companion animals through advocacy, education, targeted programs and support of the John B. Gesbocker Animal Shelter of Habersham County.

We help the community by:

  • Assisting with low cost spay and neuter options
  • Transporting animals to shelters where their chances for survival and adoption are better
  • Raising awareness and donations through grant writing, donor fundraisers, and presenting to Civic Organizations and Church groups
  • Educating students at local schools about responsible pet ownership
  • Directing aid to the Habersham County Animal Shelter
HHS Animal Transport Program

Habersham Humane Society, working with Road Trip Home, Animal Welfare Society, Cape Ann Animal Aid, Middletown Humane Society, and Greater Androscoggin Humane Society helps save homeless dogs and cats by transporting them to no-kill shelters!

Animal Welfare Society in Kennebunk, Maine is a no kill, non profit rescue that has been taking our dogs and kittens since 2012.

Transporting/transferring homeless animals from Habersham County to our northern rescue partners means less crowding in the local animal shelter which means less euthanasia.

It costs  approx.  $50  to send an animal on a transport. Consider  DONATING  to this life-saving program.

Thanks to all who have already chipped in to help us cover the expense of sending these 10 cuties to a shelter in Maine where their

furever homes are waiting for them!!!

And great THANKS to Jackie Hamby (above picture lower left) and The Thomas Sisters for fostering these pups until they were ready to go!

Every transported animal, especially puppies - like these born in the woods & rescued just in time - requires medical exams & shots before getting on the van. Donations are always needed to help us help them!!

SPRING is time for Rabies Shots!!

Your pet needs year-round Rabies protection, but Spring is a particularly crucial time to make sure your animals' vaccinations are up to date.

Georgia Law requires that all dogs and cats be vaccinated against rabies

There have already been two confirmed cases of rabies this year in Habersham County, one in Clarkesville, one Demorest. Both rabid animals were raccoons.

Local vets are concerned enough to offer low cost rabies vaccination clinics to make certain as many pet owners as possible can vaccinate their animals against rabies.   Watch our Facebook page for dates & info.

LOW COST SPAY/NEUTER!!

As a courtesy to our residents, HHS teams up with Atlanta Humane Society and Humane Society of Northeast Georgia to bring low cost spay/neuter to our community.  HHS is hoping to raise public awareness to the benefits of altering pets.  Altering reduces over-population, animal neglect, over crowded shelters and euthanasia of unwanted animals.  Altering has been proven to give your pet a longer and healthier life.

Habersham Humane Society helped get 211 pets (106 dogs/105 cats) altered in 2014 preventing THOUSANDS of unwanted animals ending up in shelters and/or euthanized!

Please do your part - make sure your pet does not produce more kittens/puppies than you are prepared to care for!!

HHS, through grants received, is offering low cost ($35) spay & neuter clinics every month through 2015 (or until our $$ runs out!).  Registration is held the first Saturday of every month at the Clarkesville Library 1:00 - 3:00.

You can sign up for:

Atlanta Humane Society Mobile Spay/Neuter dates - procedures performed in their mobile unit at Habersham Fairgrounds

or

Humane Society of Northeast Georgia picks up animals in Cornelia & takes them to their facility in Gainesville for the procedure then returns them that afternoon

or

Purchase a voucher to take your pet to the HSNEG in Gainesville yourself, scheduled at your convenience.

Whichever option is best for you, PLEASE take advantage of this great low cost opportunity.

Help us help your neighbors and we can defeat euthanasia, and

It's SPRING!!

That means skunks are on the move and our dogs may be coming into contact with the smelly critters. Anyone who's been faced with a skunk-baptized dog will appreciate this recipe.

Here is a homemade skunk spray remedy that many dog people swear by.

1 quart of three-percent hydrogen peroxide

? cup of baking soda

1 teaspoon of liquid dish detergent

Mix in a gallon jug or similar container. A jug makes pouring it over the affected areas easier. Saturate the smelly areas thoroughly. Work it into the fur well and allow to stand for at least ten minutes. Rinse well with tap water. Any of the solution left in the coat may cause skin irritation, so the rinse is important. Some dog owners bath the animal in a soothing shampoo afterward.

IMPORTANT: Do not try to store any left over solution. It is quite volatile.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!

Since Habersham Humane Society is operated entirely by a volunteer staff, we appreciate any volunteers that will donate his/her time. Needless to say, we would love your support!

Education Assistant:   Volunteers are needed to teach children and adults about the responsibilities of caring for a pet. Topics covered are pet safety, pet overpopulation, adopting from a shelter and making a lifetime commitment to your pet.

Education/Event Staff:   HHS volunteers assist with community events effectively representing HHS in a positive and informed manner.

Foster Care: Volunteers provide temporary care for puppies and kittens, cats and dogs, who are not yet ready to be transported. (An initial supply of pet food and other necessary items are provided by the HHS.

Organizing Fundraising Events:   HHS always needs help organizing our fundraising events. From finding sponsors and vendors to helping to advertise and promote the event.

Driving Transport Trips:   When we are able to transport animals to an area where their chances of adoption are better, we need drivers to take the animals from their foster home to a transfer location.

Website/Newsletter:   If you're good at writing or working on computers, helping us to get out all of the news is very important. Help is needed reporting on HHS events and taking photos for the website and newsletter.
